Lost in all the drama last night: overall, the Wildcats may have outplayed Baylor.

There seem to be two kinds of K-State fans today: those who are mad as hell about last night, and those who are giddy as schoolchildren after a snow day's been announced. The middle ground is both narrow and torturous, and not an environment for the weak-willed.

It's probably worth noting, in the aftermath, that one team last night made clear errors in execution at key moments of the game, and the other didn't. The people who are mad scream about recruiting and playcalling and their binkies.

But didn't anyone notice that without two critical turnovers, K-State might have won last night? Or that manchildbeast Shawn Oakman was bludgeoned into irrelevance last night, left panting and disinterested by the second quarter? Or that, while nobody can deny the inability of K-State's Band-Aid™ secondary to effectively cover possibly the best receiver in the country, he was catching balls thrown by a quarterback who was totally cheating, because I am pretty sure that somewhere in the rules it says you can't install target-locking software on your quarterback.

(Just in case there's anyone reading the prior paragraph whose educational peak was not, in fact, the university for which they root, that's called a joke. Nobody is actually accusing Jarrett Stidham of cheating. Much.)

Really, the only area in which we can say K-State brought their best, threw it against Baylor's best, and lost was on the line of scrimmage when Baylor had the ball -- and even then it wasn't enough of a Baylor advantage to allow the Bears to run the ball. And after halftime, when the tide started to turn and the Wildcat line started to get pressure on Stidham, guess what? The targeting systems failed, and Baylor was held to one touchdown in the second half.

One.

Wow. Think about that for awhile.

If those of you who are angry really want something to be angry about, be angry about the fact that all the national media wants to talk about is how awesome Stidham was throwing the ball to an All-American who was being covered by a true freshman. You'd think Baylor won by 40 to read some of this coverage.

Deante Burton, asked what the next step is: "Win some games." Regarding his touchdown, Burton said, "Joe threw a trust pass and lobbed it over the top and hoped that I would make the play and it worked."

Elijah Lee: "We are making headway in certain spots that we were not earlier in the season. We have shown that if we fight, we can compete with anybody."

Art Briles: "They are an impossible team to play. Their opening drive was 10 minutes and seven points. That is an eternity for us." On Hubener: "I thought he was great.
For once, the Wildcats were the better team in the second half. Here's what we learned.

It was cold and bitter, and down 21-7 at the half a not-insignificant portion of the crowd at Bill Snyder Family Stadium decamped to other locales.

They missed the best second-half Wildcat performance of the season as K-State stormed back to take the #2 team in the nation to the wire. K-State's rally ended when a double-pass attempt by Kody Cook was intercepted, and Baylor escaped with a 31-24 victory. But there was a great deal to be pleased about, even though we don't accept moral victories.

1. By and large, K-State leaned on the run

Joe Hubener was 12-21 for 151 through the air, and hit Deante Burton for the late touchdown which made it a one-possession game, and found Kody Cook 6 times for 71 yards. But for the most part, the coaching staff relied on the team's strength. The Wildcats ran the ball an insane 48 times, Hubener picking up 153 yards on 29 carries with two scores. Charles Jones added 76 on 16 carries, and Justin Silmon picked up 28 on just a pair of carries. The Wildcats were able to run right at Baylor's beast Shawn Oakman, who seemed to either wear down under the pressure of K-State's long, grueling drives... or just sort of quit.

2. Donnie Starks is a man

Starks had played fairly well against TCU, and was one of the few bright lights against Oklahoma. Tonight, he was off the hook. He was good in coverage, although he wasn't assigned to Baylor's main weapons; more importantly, though, he batted down a pass in a key situation and recorded a sack on Jarrett Stidham which forced a change of possession. Starks suffered a bad game against Texas, so he's still hit or miss, but his emergence is a boon to a depleted and ailing secondary.

3. The defense rose to the occasion

Let's not ignore the elephant in the room; in the first half, the defense was Not Good. The Wildcats gave up 260 passing yards in the first half. But when they returned from the locker room... hey, hands in the air. Baylor only amassed 159 yards in the air in the second half, and only ran for 103 the entire game. Call this cherry-picking all you like, but the bottom line is that in the final thirty minutes K-State was up to the challenge of stopping Baylor's insane offense.

4. The second half disaster didn't happen

On top of the defense's heroic second-half effort, the offense didn't come out of the locker room doing Exactly The Wrong Thing again. And the Wildcats actually won the second half, 17-10. Of course, when you're in a 14-point hole at the half that's not enough. But it's progress, and in a year where K-State was expected to be rebuilding and have suffered catastrophic injuries, we'll take it.

5. The team is fired up

No punches pulled here: the Wildcats quit against Oklahoma, and seemed listless against Texas. Tonight, they came ready to play. They answered Baylor's first lightning strike with a brutally efficient 17-play drive which ate over nine minutes of clock. Baylor responded immediately; K-State came right back out and marched downfield again, only stopped when Hubener lost a fumble after being basically blind-sided. And then, after giving up a third relatively quick score, they still didn't give up. They fought, they clawed, and in the end they had a chance to win.

Midway through the second quarter, a 4-8 season seemed entirely plausible. By the final gun, there's renewed hope that the Cats will indeed achieve bowl eligibility. It's a step in the right direction, and a welcome one for a program which has been known of late as a late-season team anyway.

We'll find out next week, and an extra two days to prepare won't hurt.

The good news: Baylor doesn't appear to have been trapped at the airport all night. We know how well that worked out for K-State the last time it happened. Spirits are high in the locker room, but pretty much underground throughout the fanbase. There's no expectations tonight, no real hope, and many of you are simply not all that interested in sitting through tonight's expected bloodbath.

But then, I remember this one time K-State walked out onto the field against The Greatest College Football Team Ever and reversed the pointspread, so there's always that.

K-State gets a Thursday-night shot at the high-octane Baylor Bears. Optimism does not abound in Manhattan.

Two years ago, K-State limped into a home meeting with Baylor at 2-3 and on a two-game losing streak. The Bears entered the contest undefeated and averaging almost 70 points per game. The Wildcats took a lead into the fourth quarter before two late Baylor touchdowns sealed a green-and-gold victory.

Tonight, K-State limps into this meeting at 3-4 and on a four-game losing streak. Baylor enters the contest undefeated and averaging more than 60 points per game. So if you're into superstition and other intangibles, K-State has Baylor right where it wants.

Players to Watch

K-State

Passing: Joe Hubener, 66-145-5, 963 yards, 6.6 yards/attempt, 5 TD, 137.6 yards/game

Rushing: Charles Jones, 60 carries, 302 yards, 5.0 yards/carry, 3 TD, 43.1 yards/game

Receiving: Deante Burton, 20 receptions, 261 yards, 13.1 yards/reception, 2 TD, 37.3 yards/game

Baylor

Passing: Jarrett Stidham, 24-28-0, 331 yards, 11.8 yards/attempt, 6 TD, 47.3 yards/game

Rushing: Shock Linwood, 121 carries, 974 yards, 8.0 yards/carry, 9 TD, 139.1 yards/game

Receiving: Corey Coleman, 47 receptions, 962 yards, 20.5 yards/reception, 18 TD, 137.4 yards/game

True freshman Jarrett Stidham makes his first career start for the injured Seth Russell. Ordinarily a true freshman making his first start in Manhattan would seem like a recipe for disaster. But Baylor seems able to plug-and-play at quarterback without missing a beat. Stidham has more touchdown passes on the year than Joe Hubener, in one-fifth as many passing attempts.

That's not as difficult when you have receivers like Coleman and KD Cannon, but it's impressive nonetheless. Coleman and Cannon are the uncoverable aliens, but Baylor will make use of Jay Lee (6'3", 220 lbs.), and god help us if he catches a slant with a head of steam.

Not much has worked on offense for K-State this year. The reasons are well documented at this point. Phil Bennett's defense will aggressively overplay the run and dare Hubener and K-State's receivers to beat them one-on-one. Experience casts doubt on this possibility coming to pass, but every day is a new day, I suppose. Be ready for K-State to throw on first down against a loaded box in an effort to loosen up the Baylor defense. The be ready for second and 10 about 60 percent of the time.

Advanced Stats

Thanks as always to Jeff for the graphs.

Conclusion

This one looks ugly. Two years ago, K-State struggled early with youth and inexperience, but still had players like Jake Waters and Daniel Sams. With the injuries at quarterback and in the defensive secondary, this team does not match up well against Baylor. It's possible the defensive front six can bow up and slow down the Baylor run game for a while, and maybe get some pressure on Stidham.

K-State usually gets the benefit of the doubt from Vegas, especially at home. But the oddsmakers have favored Baylor by more than two touchdowns from the start, and the line currently sits at -17. Bill Connelly projects Baylor to cover, though not by much. I'd take his projected result, but with the playoff rankings looming, Baylor will have incentive to pour it on.

Bears 49, Wildcats 20

The game: Kansas State (3-4, 0-4 Big 12) hosts the Baylor Bears (7-0, 4-0 Big 12, 6/2/2). K-State leads the all-time series 7-5, but they've dropped three in a row to the dark lords from Waco. Thursday night is Fort Riley Day, which may mean the return of the camoflague Powercat

Odds: Baylor is a 17.5 point favorite, and the total is only 67.5, meaning Vegas has this game pegged for a 43-25 margin. Hey, that doesn't actually look too bad...

Kickoff: Thursday, November 5 at 6:30pm CT, Bill Snyder Family Stadium (50,000) in Manhattan, Kansas.

Tickets: Sold out, obviously. The secondary market is, well, soft. We may see a lot of patrons disguised as seats tonight. The median price is a mere $10. There are vast oceans of lower-level seats for as low as $4. Want to sit in the first row of section 4? $37. In other words, you have no excuse not to go to the game if you can get to the game.

Special note re: parking: Stadium lots will open at 1:30pm. K-State would like us to remind you that the VetMed lot on Denison will have limited availability prior to 5pm, while at the same time asking that you arrive early to ease evening traffic congestion. Plan accordingly. The equestrian lot north of the fire station on Denison will be available.

Television: FOX Sports 1, with Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt, and Molly McGrath.

Radio: K-State Sports Network, with Wyatt Thompson, Stan Weber, and Matt Walters; also available on Sirius/XM 84. In Central Texas you can catch the Baylor call with John Morris, J.J. Joe, and Ricky Thompson on KRZI 1660 in Waco, as well as KSKY 660 in Dallas, KNTH 1070 in Houston, KLGO 1490 in Austin, KSLR 630 in San Antonio, and outlets in several other smaller Texas cities.

The K-State beat writer talks to us about where K-State football goes from here at quarterback and beyond, plus gives us some reason to believe Thursday's matchup with Baylor won't be a complete disaster.

Doom and gloom is inevitable following an 0-4 start in Big 12 play destined to become 0-5 following a home game against the No. 2 team in the country this Thursday night. But the Wichita Eagle/KC Star's Kellis Robinett reminds us while the way we got here might be surprising and incredibly disappointing, the record really isn't even when you consider the roster Kansas State had at the beginning of the year. In fact, he predicted an 0-5 start, but that doesn't mean the 'Cats can't still finish the season strong and make a bowl game.

Kellis also agreed it's premature to talk about Bill Snyder's potential retirement anytime soon, even if the playcalling this season has been suspect at times. The bigger problem is the personnel, particularly in the passing game, and Kellis believes Alex Delton could be an acceptable answer at quarterback. We also touched on what might keep Baylor from a total rout and had a brief discussion about Kansas State basketball at the end of the podcast.

If you enjoy Kellis's valuable insights into the program, you can find more at the websites of either The Wichita Eagle or The Kansas City Star. You can also follow him on Twitter @kellisrobinett.

Note: Just to clear up any confusion, please be aware this podcast was recorded last Wednesday, which is significantly further in advance than usual. Fortunately, not a lot has changed, but there are some references to news that broke early last week, and Iowa State looks like it may be a more formidable foe than expected.
