Discipline is forthcoming.

The Big 12 conference released a statement this afternoon acknowledging that the second-quarter error by the chain crew and field officials which was first publicized by Bring on the Cats was, in fact, an error.

The conference acknowledged that following the 10-yard holding penalty which moved Oklahoma State back to their own 45, the chains were "mistakingly set" for the yard-to-gain.

Big 12 supervisor of officials Walt Anderson said, "Accurracy [sic] and adherence to Conference policies and officiating mechanics are vital to the proper administration of the rules in all games." He went on to add, "Disciplinary actions will be addressed with both the field officials and chain crew."

We may never know what those disciplinary actions are, or the conference may announce them. What's important is accountability, and that the on-field officials are held responsible for their performance. We at Bring on the Cats would like to make this abundantly clear: we do not feel that the mistake cost Kansas State a win. It may have; alternatively, Oklahoma State may have simply gone for it on fourth down, converted, and continued on to score. We have no way of knowing, and it's not important. What has happened has happened, and we most certainly wish to be clear that Oklahoma State's exceptional performance on defense during the first 20 minutes of the second half had far more to do with Kansas State losing yesterday than a bad call by the officials. We don't want to take away from that. Oklahoma State did what it needed to do, on the field and within the rules, to win that football game.

Bad calls affect every team in this league; indeed, one can argue that a bad call in one Big 12 game affects all ten Big 12 teams in the end. If this conference is to regain its stature in the college football world, the conference must aspire to excellence. Fans of all Big 12 schools should demand this, even when it's not their team that's affected.

To that end, we call on all media devoted to covering the Big 12 to join us. When there are bad calls, let's all beat the drum. If you're a neutral party, investigate and cover the issue. If you're a single-team site and those errors benefit your team, speak up and acknowledge them (as many Oklahoma State fans did indeed do last night and today, for which we thank them). If they're in another game, stand up and object.

Yes, even if they're against Texas or Oklahoma. Let's stop eating each other when it comes to this.

Demand excellence. All ten teams in this league deserve that, from the on-field officials, from the conference administration, and from the conference's media partners. Stop settling for less. Set aside your differences and demand that this league be more than the sum of its parts. And if we don't notice, make us aware.

We will fight. Because this has to stop.

At least we had fun during the first 30 minutes.

A 37-yard Ben Grogan field goal with only half a minute left in the game sent Kansas State to their first loss of the season, a 36-34 setback against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater.

The Wildcats led nearly throughout, taking an early advantage behind the magic of wide receiver Kody Cook, forced to take over at quarterback when Joe Hubener was knocked out of the game after what should have been a targeting call on Tre Flowers. But the defense let the Wildcats down in the second half, giving up 16 second-half points to surrender the lead and send Kansas State to its fifth consecutive loss in Stillwater, all by a touchdown or less.

Surprisingly, after surrendering the lead, K-State fought back. A touchdown run by Hubener, who re-entered the game after Cook was injured on his second 25-plus yard run of the day, put K-State back in front with three minutes to go. The two-point conversion failed, however, and for the second straight drive Oklahoma State was able to march unimpeded downfield, leading to the winning field goal.

Also of note, K-State got their first interception of the season, a deflected pass by Danzel McDaniel landing in Will Davis breadbasket. But then K-State also threw their first one of the year, Joe Hubener's last desperate heave on K-State's final drive.

So what did we learn?

1. Kody Cook is a baller

Cook was phenomenal today. The walk-on fifth-string quarterback was 10-16 for 122 yards, and ran for 87 yards -- not adjusted for sacks, and he got sacked a lot. He threw for two scores, ran for another, and twice set K-State's high mark for rushing yardage on a single play. He had a 27-yard run in the first half, then a 32-yard breakout in the fourth quarter. That play was fateful, however, as he was injured on the tackle. Hubener added 85 yards, but 72 of it was on one play and he was only 3-9.

2. The run defense is still pretty solid

What will be lost due to Mason Rudolph throwing for 441 yards and four touchdowns is that Oklahoma State ran the ball 27 times and only gained 49 yards.

3. The pass defense is execrable

Is it the talent or the scheme? Well, we got part of the answer. We hate calling a player out here, especially one who is a vital part of the package otherwise. But Morgan Burns was consistently abused on Oklahoma State's final two drives, and on the penultimate drive on which the Cowboys first took the lead he was absolutely horrible. He was beaten on three straight plays, the last of which resulted in a touchdown even though Burns committed pass interference on the play trying to salvage it. Was it just a bad game? Yes. Burns has the speed and savvy to actually cover his receiver; he wasn't beaten because he was outrun or shaken out of his cleats. He simply wasn't looking for the ball. That needs work.

4. Justin Silmon still needs the ball

Silmon only averaged 3.3 yards a carry, and only gained 50 yards. And yet giving him the ball rather than lining up four wide and trying to have Cook play the role of Collin Klein, draw play specialist, didn't work at all when it was really necessary. The key moment was a third-down play deep in Wildcat territory, following a K-State timeout. The Cats came out four-wide, Cook ran the ball on a draw, and was completely smothered. Oklahoma State was keyed on the exact play that the staff called, and that's inexcusable coming off a timeout.

5. Only the quarterback can throw the ball away

Yes, we learned this today, because Glenn Gronkowski ran out of the tackle box on a failed fullback pass play and threw the ball into the stands. Apparently, only the player who takes the snap can deliberately throw the ball away.

It's a deflating loss, one which breaks K-State's streak of games won when leading at the half. It exposed a lot of problems which make it clear that the Wildcats are probably not beating Baylor, or TCU, or Oklahoma, and maybe not even Texas Tech or West Virginia. The problem becomes even clearer when you consider the injuries; quarterback will be a desperate prayer through the rest of the season, and with injuries to both Cook and Dominique Heath receiver is now an even bigger concern than it has been. Right now, K-State is going to have to count on beating Iowa State, Texas, and Kansas to become bowl eligible.

If there's anything we can really take away from today it's that the first half was lots of fun. The second half was not.

We may want to get used to it.

Well, this has been a strangely interesting 90 minutes.

Joe Hubener went down just a few plays into the game, and it doesn't even matter. Wide receiver Kody Cook stepped in, and led the Wildcats to 28 first-half points, and Kansas State heads into the locker room with an eight-point lead.

Cook was an incomprehensible 8-10 for 127 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, adding 58 yards and a score on 14 carries, including a 27-yard romp -- the Wildcats' longest run from scrimmage this season. There are already sportswriters claiming he's the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week no matter what insanity Baylor perpetrates on Texas Tech.

There are down notes: Hubener being knocked out, Dominique Heath pulling up lame after making a key reception, a porous pass defense, and Jack Cantele's last-chance field goal to end the half bouncing off the right upright.

But Danzel McDaniel recovered a "fumble" -- actually a tipped lateral -- to set up the final Wildcat touchdown of the half, and the offensive line has been really, really effective... for the most part. There's still a small problem on the right side which needs to be <s>benched</s> corrected.

Kody Cook, man. Wow. Just wow.

The game: Kansas State (3-0, 0-0 B12, rv/rv) vists the Oklahoma State Cowboys (4-0, 1-0 B12, 20/19). The Cowboys lead the all-time series 37-24, largely due to their 20-8 advantage in Stillwater; things are much different in Manhattan. K-State's only win in Stillwater during the Big 12 era was in 1999.

Odds: Oklahoma State opened as a three point favorite, but that's since ballooned to 7.5 points. Strangely, the total has gone DOWN from 51 to 49.5; that means at open Oklahoma State was expected to win 27-24, but now they're predicted to win 29-21.

Kickoff: Saturday, October 3 at 3:00pm CT, Boone Pickens Stadium (60,000) in Stillwater OK.

Tickets: If you're hoping to make the trip and don't already have tickets, there are quite a few available on the secondary market. Prices range from $41-$150, ignoring the crazy person trying to sell upper corner seats for a grand. The average price is around $70. There are, at this writing, seven field-level seats behind the K-State sideline going for $77-125; there are a ton of mid-level seats on the Wildcat side going from between $55-90.

If you're attending, the K-State Alumni Association will host a pre-game at 11am at Brooklyn's, 701 S. Main Street in Stillwater. There's no fee and no reservations, and food and drinks are on you. Kirk and Noel Schulz will be in attendance, as well as several associate athletic directors.

Television: Fox Sports 1 with Justin Kutcher, Steve Hutchinson, and Bruce Feldman, the same crew that called the K-State/UTSA game.

Radio: K-State Sports Network, with Wyatt Thompson, Stan Weber, and Matt Walters; 810 AM in Kansas City, 1410 AM/1480 AM in Wichita, and of course 1350 AM/101.5 FM in Manhattan.
Key players have had nagging injuries for Oklahoma State and could be an issue for them during this week 5 match-up.

Kansas State escaped Louisiana Tech with more than just a win, they also escaped relatively un-injured as no major injuries took place during the game. Here is your update on the players who have been injured this season.

Kansas State

Boston Stiverson (OL)-Leg

As expected Stiverson missed the La Tech game, and until my eyes see differently, I'm going to assume he misses the Oklahoma State game as well. Hopefully he is able to come back soon though, as this offensive line could use the help.

Jesse Ertz (QB)-Leg

Ertz status remains unchanged as he is expected to miss the majority if not all of the season.

Dante Barnett (S)-Shoulder

Bill Snyder confirmed (for him) that Barnett will likely miss the Oklahoma State game.

Matt McCrane (K)-Leg

McCrane missed the La Tech game and with Jack Cantele kicking so well, I would expect McCrane to continue to rest his injured leg.

Alex Delton (QB)-Knee

No new update on Delton besides Robinett's initial report of his knee injury. Do not expect him to play against Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State has been lucky in that they have had very few injuries this season, though the ones they have had have happened to key players.

Mason Rudolph (QB)- Hand

Many were puzzled by Mike Gundy's decision to fire up the QB carousel during the Texas game, as Rudolph and J. W. Walsh split more time than normal during the second half. However, it appears that was due to Rudolph suffering a "stinger" to his right hand making it difficult for him to grip and throw the ball. Given how important a QB's hand is in throwing the ball, it wouldn't surprise me to see more of Walsh at QB than originally expected.

Chris Carson (RB)-Ankle

Carson appeared to injure his right ankle during the Texas game, though Mike Gundy said Monday he expected Carson to play against Kansas State.

Rennie Childs (RB)-Undisclosed

Frenemy blog Cowboys Ride for Free reported earlier this week that Childs suffered an unknown injury during practice and will be held out of the K-State game per an unnamed source. If Carson and Childs do miss the game, expect true freshman Jeff Carr will likely get the start against the stout Kansas State run defense.

Vili Leveni (DT)Ankle

DT Vili Leveni tore his Achilles tendon during spring practice and is out for the season.
