One yard. One stinking yard. Unacceptable and embarrassing.

Jake Waters was 22-34 for exactly 400 yards with a touchdown and a completely irrelevant interception on the final play of the game, and Tyler Lockett had 321 all-purpose yards and a punt return for a score as Kansas State survived a 26-20 grinder over the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown.

The most notable fact about this game, of course: K-State won despite having exactly one yard rushing, and if you're a K-State fan you may as well settle in for about a month of being mocked for that on the internet.

Lockett had 10 catches for 196 yards, leaving him four catches and two touchdowns short of his father. He added 125 return yards to that as well.

1. There's a definite problem with the running game.

I've been arguing against this proposition for a few weeks, but I have to throw in the towel. Yes, West Virginia is stout against the run. Yes, part of the problem is that the staff is less inclined to let Jake Waters run the ball as much as he did last year.

But he led the team in carries tonight with 12 and yards with 13 (not adjusted for sacks), and the rushing output was unquestionably an embarrassment. K-State had a total of seven yards rushing on the night before trying to run out the final minute of the clock, which reduced that total back toward zero. Until their final actual drive, that yardage was in negative numbers. Charles Jones managed to get into positive yardage with a whopping four yards; DeMarcus Robinson finished with -7. K-State finished with one yard rushing.

What's to blame? The offensive line? Schemes? Play-calling? Debate at will.

2. Discipline has, inexplicably, become a problem.

"Probably as undisciplined as I can remember. We really did not play very well." Those were the words out of Bill Snyder's mouth on his way off the field, and it's impossible to argue with him.

Oh, the penalties. Cody Whitehair and Boston Stiverson were notably guilty; both were flagged on two separate infractions on one play, and together they committed a chop block which damaged a drive. Kansas State, the team that never gets flagged, got hit with 9 penalties for 97 yards. Flat-out ugly.

Not only that, this team still can't tackle. Mario Alford's fourth-quarter touchdown was also an embarrassment. But that leads us to...

3. The defense just has too much trouble getting off the field.

The Wildcats did manage to get the stops they needed to in the end, as evidenced by the final score. But West Virginia was 6-16 on third down... and 2-3 on 4th. That means 16 times, K-State had a chance to end drives, and failed ten times (counting the two West Virginia field goals).

You have to take this with some level of resignation; a win is a win, and the guys bucked down, so on, so forth. But this is what killed K-State last week against TCU, and it's what's going to kill K-State against Baylor in 16 days and in their bowl game. This team has to get it together defensively, somehow.

The end result

K-State improves to 8-2, 6-1 in the conference, and just need to handle Kansas and then knock off Baylor to share the Big 12 title. West Virginia falls to 6-5, 4-4 in the conference. If the playoff committee just looks at this as a tough road win, K-State could place themselves in an interesting position by this time two weeks from now, but can we trust them to dominate the Jayhawks? And do we have any real faith that this team can win in Waco?

We'll have to wait for the optimists to chime on on that topic.

You know the cliche. Don't let the same team beat you twice. That seems unlikely with a 12-day layoff between the heartrending destruction in Fort Worth and the Wildcats' legendary preparation and focus. But this game is critically important for K-State's endgame this season. A win would set the Wildcats clearly on a course to get a rare shot: a chance to take the field, win a game, and be rewarded. And yes, we're sort of overlooking the 80-pound chicken down the river, but we can be forgiven that. The point here: a win in Morgantown is vital, and coming home with one would allow them to control their own destiny as far as New Years plans.

Last time K-State traveled to Morgantown, it was to face a top-ten team led by a Heisman Trophy candidate, and the Wildcats had completely silenced the normally raucous Milan Puskar crowd long before halftime. It's critical to get off to a good start tonight as well. A statement needs to be made.

Your Tyler Lockett watch: Our young prodigy broke his father's career yardage record in the loss to TCU. He is now two touchdowns and 14 receptions short of completing the trifecta. But there's something else going on tonight as well: Curry Sexton is looking to become the first Wildcat receiver to record three straight 100-yard games since Jordy Nelson did so back in 2007.

And with that, let's get this party started. GO CATS!

Matthew Kirchner of The Smoking Musket stops by to answer a few questions about the Mountaineers.

After a midseason collapse in 2012 and a calamitous 2013 season, Dana Holgorsen entered 2014 on the hot seat at West Virginia. The Mountaineers have rebounded against a brutal schedule and currently stand 6-4. West Virginia hopes to regain its early season momentum with closing wins against K-State and Iowa State. Matthew Kirchner of The Smoking Musket took time to answer a few questions about the 'eers.

TB: Dana Holgersen was on the hot seat coming into this season, and while West Virginia has four losses this season, there's noticeable improvement. What's his future prognosis in Morgantown?

MK: Holgo has definitely saved his job this year. He was able to manage the brutal schedule and get the wins he needed to send WVU bowling. Obviously 8-4 would be better than 6-6 but I'm convinced that 6 wins was all Dana needed. Add that to a stellar 2015 recruiting class and Holgorsen's future looks bright

Now, next year he has to show that this can be maintained while breaking in a new QB and WR corps but I think that we have players who have bought in to the program.

TB: Offensively at least, the personnel this year is mostly the same as last year. What's different that's led to the better play?

MK: Familiarity and health. Trickett's arm isn't falling off and that's a big first step.

Last year we were a hodge podge of skill players that had never been on the same field and it showed. We're a whole lot better in Holgo's system and he's finally comfortable calling the same stuff as he did for Geno a crew. White and Alford are actually running routes, too, which is cool.

Now this ties in to my prior answer: we break in a whole new cast of characters next season and that scares me a whooole lot.

TB: Of course, the offense is only part of the story. West Virginia is currently 33rd in Defensive F/+, a 32-spot improvement over last year's finishing rank. What's different on that side of the ball?

MK: Big time improvement in the secondary. No longer are you throwing up prayers against West Virginia and getting completions every damn time.

Daryl Worley is a true number one CB and Karl Joseph is developing exactly as we all hoped when he was the lone bright spot on 2012's WVU dumpster fire D.

Tony Gibson has brought an aggressive pass rush to WVU that was able to play cover zero against Baylor and shut them down. At the end of the day, I'm always going to have the opinion that getting to the QB is king and we've done that when we've needed to.

Now, there are still big time problems with run stopping on the D line, as that's the one place where our recruiting isn't quite where I want it to be, but I think that problem is going to have to be something we wait until 2015 to fix.

TB: At least based on F/+, these are two evenly matched teams. How are the 'eers on special teams, including kick and punt returns, punting and placekicking?

MK: oh god

I don't know where to start. Josh Lambert is a Groza candidate who had a tough one in Austin but has been absolute money from deep. Nick O'Toole has great facial hair and can punt really far.

But oh god.

We don't have anyone on roster who can catch a punt so you should probably just punt every down and you'll advance down the field.

Thanks, Matt. The game starts at 6 p.m. CST, and will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.

Last time K-State was in Morgantown, disaster struck. For the hosts.

October 20, 2012. The Kansas State Wildcats had risen to #4 in the polls, but were still widely questioned despite wins at Norman and over the Miami Hurricanes. The week before, West Virginia -- marching through their first season in the Big 12 -- had been #5 in the country before suffering a beatdown in Lubbock.

Despite these events, the narrative was that the Mountaineers had simply stumbled; Geno Smith was too much of a talent to be shut down two games in a row, K-State's secondary wasn't up to the task, and the Wildcat offense was too primitive to depend on. Collin Klein was still widely seen as just an okay game-manager.

Then he unloaded on West Virginia, on their home turf no less.

Two weeks later, K-State was #1 in the country; at season's end West Virginia ended up in the Pinstripe Bowl. And here's how it all happened, in this week's Campus Classic courtesy of our friends at Campus Insiders.

The game: Kansas State (7-2, 5-1, 12/11/12) visits the West Virginia Mountaineers (6-4, 4-3). K-State leads the series 3-1, and has won both meetings since West Virginia joined the Big 12. West Virginia has not beaten K-State in 84 years; that lone win was a 23-7 decision in Morgantown way back in 1930. All time, K-State has outscored the Mountaineers by an average score of 29-12; K-State's wins have all been by at least 19 points. Dominance! (And small sample sizes!)

Odds: The game opened as a pick 'em. The Mountaineers are now 2.5 point favorites. Sure, okay.

Kickoff: Thursday, November 20 at 6:00pm CT, Milan Puskar Stadium (60,000) in Morgantown, West Virginia.

On the secondary market, you can find tons of lower-level seats -- in the end zone for as low as $9, on the K-State sideline for as low as $11. The average price is around $19, and there are seats as close as the second row, on the K-State sideline, as low as $25. What we're saying here is if you can get to Morgantown tonight, you can get good seats cheap.

Television: National broadcast on FOX Sports 1 with Tim Brando, Joel Klatt, and Jenny Taft.

Radio: K-State Sports Network, with Wyatt Thompson, Stan Weber, and Matt Walters; either K-State's or WVU's feed will be available on Sirius/XM 91. If you're in West Virginia you can catch the game on West Virginia's network with Tony Caridi, Dwight Wallace, and Jed Drenning.

Is Jake Waters healthy enough to lead Kansas State to a victory in Morgantown? That's the big injury questions leading up to this game.

A week off is enough time to heal right? For K-State's sake I hope so as West Virginia is a much improved from a year ago, and Kansas State needs Jake Waters to be as close to 100 percent as possible. As you'll see below neither team has huge injury concerns, but the biggest question mark injury wise for this game is Jake.

Kansas State

Jake Waters, QB

I'm listing Jake here because he is clearly not 100 percent. Just like Collin two years ago, Waters looked bothered by a nagging injury to his shoulder in the biggest game of the season. Hopefully the off week helped Jake heal, and he can continue to lead the offense towards a New Year's Day Bowl.

Kyle Klein, WR

The news here hasn't changed, Klein is sitting out this season with a medical red-shirt.

Charmeachealle Moore, LB

Out for the season and hoping for a hardship medical waiver.

Travis Green, S

Travis Green underwent a scope on his right knee according to a twitter post he made on October 9th and is out indefinitely.

West Virginia

Travis Bell, CB

Travis Bell left the Mountaineers after appearing in the first three games of the season, due to personal reasons. Bell was a fifth-year senior.

Jared Barber, LB

Barber tore his ACL during West Virginia's game against Texas a season ago, and has sat out this season with hopes of gaining a medical red-shirt.

William Crest, QB

Crest, Clint Trickett's backup, is out for the season after suffering a shoulder injury in practice sometime in October. West Virginia is hopeful that he will make a full recovery as he is the presumptive starter next season.

Jacky Marcellus, WR

Marcellus was expected to see action in the slot position this season, running jet sweeps, and quick screens in Dana Holgorsen's offense, but a knee injury during the pre-season left him sidelined until at least January.

Brandon Napoleon, CB

Brandon Napoleon is out for the season after undergoing knee surgery.
