Tonight: Clash of the Titans. Only without all the cool CGI.

This is the end, my beautiful friends. The end. The 2013-14 college basketball season comes to a close with a titanic clash as for the first time ever in Division I, two undefeated teams square off for the championship. Just for added intrigue, Connecticut attempts to become the second Division I team ever to win both the men's and women's tournament in the same year (the first was, well, Connecticut), and the American Athletic Conference is hoping to be able to infuriate the Big Five conferences by waving both basketball championships and a BCS bowl win in their collective faces.

Oh, did we just display a subtle lack of neutrality? We're sorry. Anyway, this is your open thread for this historic event, and our final gathering to enjoy basketball that doesn't suck until November.

Damnit, we did it again. Sorry. Very sorry.

We can talk about underseeding and rules choking the life out of the game and the fact that nobody really likes either of these teams, but let's give credit where it's due: Kentucky and UConn put it all together when it mattered. Fighting-the-man data point for tonight: it's entirely possible that the American Athletic Conference can walk away tomorrow with both NCAA basketball titles and a BCS bowl win, and it's here that we have to remind you that the American is technically a mid-major now.

Tonight is important historically because there's a really good chance we're going to end up having two undefeated teams facing off for the national championship on Tuesday. Although there have been matchups of undefeated teams in the D-II, D-III, and NAIA championship games in the past, it's never happened in Division I. So while I, personally, am normally inclined on a nearly genetic level to root for the underdog, tonight is an exception; I've got no love for Maryland or Stanford anyway, and the prospect of seeing history is worth it.

The dream finally died for South Dakota State once they had to go out on the road, but they gave it a great run and only lost by three on the Miners' home court. Now UTEP, who has also ridden the home-court gravy train throughout, has a chance to win the school's first major basketball title since Glory Road. Rutgers, on the other hand, has been fairly solid playing on the road in this tournament, so anything could happen today.

The sentimental favorite here in EMAW country is of course SMU, the last team standing that people generally felt deserved a crack at the big dance. Drawing the only team which wasn't a top seed for the semifinals makes that road even easier. In the late game, the other surviving top seeds collide, and we know for whom at least one staff member is rooting.

It's a shame these games weren't in the opposite order, because Clemson-SMU is the NIT semifinal we're most interested in, while Yale-VMI is the CIT semifinal everyone should try to see. The Keydets are one of those teams with a wacky scoreboard-rattling offense. In the late game, two mid-major programs with histories of NCAA success meet up for the right to reach the final.

Saturday, we actually got upsets as both Tennessee and South Carolina fell by the wayside. Two women's Elite Eight games without a single one-seed remaining? That's just ridiculous. But here we are. That said, the better seeds in these games do still seem to be clearly superior to their opponents, but the same was true of Maryland and North Carolina's opponents two days ago. Hold on to your water, this could be an interesting pair of games.

I remember once upon a time when Siena was the biggest story in March. There'd been an outbreak of some virulent crud or another, and the America East tournament had to be played in an empty arena, and Siena came out on top. I think they knocked someone off in the first round of the Big Dance, too. For all that, winning the CIT would be the program's high-water mark, surpassing that year they made the NIT Final Four and Doremus Bennerman dumped 51 on the 'Cats in an unforgettable one-on-two duel with Askia Jones and Deryl Cunningham. I don't hold that against them and neither should you; I mean, it was just the third-place game.

Personally, I can't root for any of these four teams, but the average neutral fan should have no trouble picking a side tonight, and it's almost certainly going to be "Baylor and A&M" or "Notre Dame and UConn". The choice will depend on whether you're an underdog supporter or whether you're cheering for the "and-0" crowd. From the midwest perspective both Baylor and Texas A&M have been forces of nature for some time, and while neither was in any danger whatsoever of having a 40-0 season this year, they were still not teams you wanted next up on your schedule. Can one (or both) of them be the team to finally solve one (or both) of the unbeatens?

If you like your Elite Eight pairings to be familiar and high-profile, tonight's the night for you. Thirteen of the 73 NCAA Division I championships have been won by the four teams playing tonight. Can Kentucky's freshmen hold it together for another night, or will Michigan's experience from last year be enough to finally end the Wildcat miracle? Can Connecticut continue their mildly-suprising run, or will Sparty prove that the vast majority of everyone was right about them being under-seeded by reaching the Final Four? We'll find out.

Only one team playing today is more than one seed line off expectations, and they're probably catching a flight home this evening. Other than LSU-Louisville, it's all chalk today, and thus mostly bereft of the opportunity to surprise.

The late game sees a South Florida team trying to generate something positive for an athletic department under siege by earning a trip to the WNIT Final Four. Mississippi State's standing in their way, though. In the early game, South Dakota State's cinderella run continues, as the Summit League somehow remains among the conferences still playing basketball.
