On Tuesday, January 27th, Darreyl Patterson sent out the following tweet:

Patterson is a 6'0", 165 lbs, defensive back from Lawton, OK. Ranked as a three star by Rivals.com, ESPN.com, and 247Sports.com, Patterson, who runs a 4.45 40, also had offers from: Washington State, Arkansas State, Iowa State, North Texas, Oklahoma, Tulsa, and Wyoming. Baylor, Louisville, Texas and Oklahoma State also were rumored to have shown interest in Patterson, although those schools have yet to extend an offer.

Nationally, 247sports.com has Patterson listed as 68th best Athlete in the country, while ranking him 8th in Oklahoma. The Oklahoman named Patterson to their All-State team as a defensive back, and ranked him 8th on their Super 30 list of high school players. While his commitment is believed to be solid, Patterson has continued to take official visits, including trips to Waco on January 30th, and Louisville on the 31st.

As you'll see below Patterson's Hudl.com video shows off his impressive running back skills, but most are projecting Patterson as a defensive back at the collegiate level, so let's focus on the first two plays shown.

In the first play Patterson shows great closing speed on the ball carrier and the ability to finish the tackle. In play two, Patterson's speed is on display again, as he reads the QB's eyes and picks off the pass in the end zone. Without more defensive plays it's hard to get a full read on him, but based on these plays Patterson is one of the better players at matching speed and instinct with good defensive technique. I could see him making an impact his freshman year, if not on defense than on special teams, and he has the speed to be a weapon as a return man.

Overall, this is another solid pick up for the Wildcats, as Patterson adds more depth in a secondary, that in recent years has seen some fall off after injuries to starters.
