Baseball

Yesterday’s Sports Extra featured K-State assistant baseball coach Austin Wates, who shared his thoughts on equality and the overall lack of diversity in college baseball.

Senior RHP Brett Lockwood has signed a free agent deal with the Cincinnati Reds instead of exercising his option to return to K-State for his “extra” season of eligibility granted due to the pandemic. Best of luck, Brett!

Football

WOW. It was just Monday yesterday — right?

On the Kansas State Wildcats side of things, Chris Klieman and the football team picked up two big commitments yesterday. First up was Wildcat legacy, and 3-star TE, Austin Weiner. Weiner is the son of Todd Weiner, offensive tackle in the mid-90’s for Bill Snyder, and while he’ll be classified as a Kansas recruit and will graduate from Gardner-Edgerton HS in Gardner, KS (KC Metro), the Weiner family lived in Georgia until this year.

A little later in the afternoon (actually early evening Kansas time), Brayden Wood, a 3-star DT out of Colorado, committed to the Wildcats. Wood was swayed hard by the recruiting efforts of 4-star QB commit Jake Rubley, as the pair have been friends since childhood.

Before we get into the firestorm of Monday, a story on one of our own. Tyler Lockett, who is about as clean-cut and wholesome as you can get, shared his own “driving while black” story, and others, to Guerin Emig at the Tulsa World (Tyler grew up in Tulsa). It’s a pretty powerful read.

Other

Chuba Hubbard set the sports world ablaze yesterday, and not for his rushing feats (which are impressive in their own right). His first comment on Twitter directed at a photo of Mike Gundy wearing a “OAN” shirt drew thousands of responses, and spurred outspoken support from both current and former Oklahoma State Cowboys football players, as well as stern comments directed at Gundy from both the OSU president and athletics director. Later in the day, a joint video was posted wherein Gundy didn’t really say anything useful, and Hubbard was the one apologizing. But this morning, Hubbard appeared to walk back that apology just a bit in a statement posted to Twitter:
