SLATE: Kansas State is a golf school now?

K-State gave up seven unanswered runs to lose 8-4 at Oklahoma State, allowing the Cowboys to complete the three-game sweep.

The tennis squad fell to 0-4 in conference play yesterday, falling 4-3 to Baylor — a team which is 6-15 on the season.

So let’s talk about golf instead.

The women once again finished squarely in the middle of the pack, this time posting a 2-over par 866 to finish seventh in the MountainView Collegiate Invitational at the Preserve Golf Club in Saddlebrook, Ariz. (Not Tucson, as was inadvertently reported yesterday.)

Iowa State was the eventual victor, and they absolutely went off yesterday; they won the tournament by 14 strokes over Texas State, who finished Saturday in first place. The Cyclones were 28-under, so K-State was never in danger of challenging.

Niamh McSherry retained her grip on a top-10 finish, however, recording a 3-under 213, seven shots off the lead.

Jacob Eklund led all individuals on the final day of play at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, N.C. Eklund tore up UNC’s Finley Golf Course with a 4-under 68, and in the process vaulted all the way up to fifth place overall at 2-under 214. That score was only a stroke off of second place but a whopping seven shots behind individual champion Adrien Dumont de Chassart of Illinois, who fired a 9-under 207 on the weekend.

The team, buoyed by Eklund’s performance, slid into third place overall at 12-over, 13 shots back of the hosts. Roland Massimino also landed in the top 20, shooting 3-over for a tie in 19th place.

The result doesn’t hold a candle to last week’s tournament and individual wins, but it was still a creditable performance which indicates that even a bad weekend for the Wildcat men’s golf team is still palatable.

Wish something else was right now.
