Wildcats come up big in final minutes

Kansas State beat Iowa State 58-57 in Ames yesterday. This is the first time since 2011 that Kansas State has scored back-to-back wins over Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum.

Barry Brown hit a layup with four seconds left in the game to give his team the win, a near-duplicate of his efforts against West Virginia. Brown had 23 points overall, with 18 coming in the second half.

This game marked the return of Dean Wade, who—as noted in Luke Thompson’s recap—still appears a bit hampered by his injury. Nevertheless, he played 22 minutes and finished with a game-high nine rebounds, and hopefully, he’ll be back to his expected form soon.

It won’t be a moment too soon, as the Wildcats continue their road trip. They will take on Oklahoma in Norman on Wednesday at 6 PM.

Meanwhile, the Kansas State women are currently struggling against Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown. The game tipped off at noon, and as of this writing, the Wildcats are down by 17 points in the third quarter. Sigh.

Track and Field

Kansas State’s track and field squads began the 2019 season in earnest at home, hosting North Texas, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and UMKC at the Wildcat Invitational. It was a good weekend for both the men’s and women’s teams as they combined for 20 individual titles and both teams swept the meet.

Winners include Clare Fallon (women’s triple jump), Isaac Smallwood (men’s triple jump), Aaron Booth (men’s long jump), Cara Melgares (women’s mile), Lauren Taubert (women’s 60m hurdles), Alex Ferguson (women’s 600m), Antoni Hoyte-Small (men’s 600m), Kassidy Johnson (women’s 1000m), Anna Keeley (women’s 3000m), Ethan Powell (men’s 3000m), and the women’s 4x400 (Taubert, Ranae McKenzie, Akia Guerrier, Lavaun Stephenson).

Up next, the two teams will travel to Lawrence, Kansas for the Sunflower Triangular on January 18th, featuring Kansas and Wichita State.
