Our big news today isn’t football, but we almost always lead with football during football season, so let’s get that over with as quickly as possible.
Football
Kellis Robinett reports on the afflictions of the Wildcat running backs, who were expected to be the shining stars of this lineup and have run into a brick wall -- figurative adjective, literal noun.
Yesterday’s Sports Extra was all about Will Geary, but there were no wild and implausible rumors. Sorry, ECAW.
Soccer
Today’s Sports Extra is all about Brad Hill and Mike Dibbini reacting to Saturday’s huge announcement which somehow escaped everyone’s attention: a $10 million combined project to both renovate Tointon Family Stadium and replace the current temporary soccer facility with a permanent 1,400-seat stadium. New offices and locker rooms for both programs are also in store. Of the $10M goal, $7.5M has already been raised, so dig into your piggy banks to make this new jewel on College Avenue a reality.
That was the best news of the weekend for the soccer program. There was good news which wasn’t quite as awesome, as K-State held 9th-ranked Texas scoreless in regulation on Sunday at the now-doomed K-State Soccer Complex. The bad news was that 2:30 into overtime, Haley Berg fired a 17-yard line drive into the net to give the Longhorns (12-1-2, 4-1-2) a 1-0 victory. It was still a game effort for the Wildcats (6-8-1, 1-5-0), who are putting on a hell of a show for a second-year program.
Golf
The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate happened, and Ben Fernandez finished in a tie for 25th. The team placed 14th out of 15 teams. Oof.
Other
Over the weekend, Washington State athletic director Bill Moos quit, allegedly due to conflicts with former K-State president Kirk Schulz. He already has a new job — he’s the new AD at Nebraska. CHAOS! POPCORN!
