K-State Slate: 8.23.14 - Weekend Edition

All the news that's fit to link, now on weekends!

USA TODAY Sports

No, this is not a figment of your imagination. This is the inaugural weekend edition of the Slate, for all your Saturday pre-game reading needs.

BracketCat's roster countdown is now down to #8, with backup QB Joe Hubener and kicker Dillon Wilson. Meanwhile, Jon Morse brought us a second round of preseason crowdsourcing.

The Capital-Journal's retrospective continues with Kurt Caywood's coverage of Allen Webb leading the Cats to a come-from-behind victory over Missouri in 2005 in what was then intended as Bill Snyder's last game as head coach, and Tim Bisel's report from the same day.

Plenty of individual player profiles this weekend:

Ken Corbitt profiles redshirt defensive tackle Will Geary. The things being said about him (monster, workhorse, freak in the weight room) recalls both Ryan Mueller and Jonathan Truman, which can only mean good things in the future.

Meanwhile, Kevin Haskin visits with Weston Hiebert and his successful transition from eight-man football in high school to special teams captain at K-State.

Arne Green of the Hays Daily News brings us this piece on Morgan Burns, who has finally made the progression from high school running back to a starter at defensive back.

Kelly McHugh profiles BJ Finney for this KStatesports SE feature. Finney is apparently the team dad, but you already knew that.

Finally, our cousins at Rock Chalk Talk predict the final Big 12 standings, and if you're looking for DISRESPECT, you will not find out in Lawrence. What you will find is a general lack of confidence in KU's prospects, however.
