Our sports calendar has officially entered its holiday slow-down. With no football in our immediate future, and basketball not quite in the hot part of the season, there was not a lot of content here yesterday, but BracketCat did drop Week 14 of his Wildcats in the NFL feature. All hail Jordy Nelson!
The Big 12 office announced the coaches' selection of all-conference players. Fourteen Wildcats made the list. First-team selections include Tyler Lockett (as wide receiver and return man), B.J. Finney, Glenn Gronkowski, Ryan Mueller, and Randall Evans. Lockett was also named Special Teams Player of the Year, while Finney is the Offensive Lineman of the Year. The two are among only three players to earn all-conference honors in four consecutive years. (Ty Zimmerman was the first).
Jake Waters, Curry Sexton and Cody Whitehair earned second-team recognition on the offense, while the second team defense featured Jonathan Truman, Dante Barnett and Danzel McDaniel.
Matthew McCrane, Travis Britz and Boston Stiverson earned honorable mentions.
David Ubben picked his own all-Big 12 team, which does not deviate much from the official list.
The Collegian's Emilio Rivera drops his Big 12 power rankings heading into the holiday break, and not surprisingly, Kansas State is in tenth place.
Meanwhile, Governor Brownback has floated the idea of a basketball version of the Governor's Cup, although he wants the competition to include Wichita State, although I'm not sure how that works since neither Kansas nor Kansas State are scheduled to play the Shockers. I wonder if the state can mandate such scheduling though.
Speaking of Wichita State, guess where Kansas State is headed this Friday. The Wildcats will look to extend their winning streak against the Shockers. Kansas State leads the all-time series 41-7.
