Finally, a Florida bowl: Kansas State to meet NC State in Orlando’s Pop-Tarts Bowl

Missing, presumed chicken: Notre Dame

It’s not the Orange Bowl, which of course was once the holy grail for a Big 8 team.

But at least it’s in Florida, meaning Kansas State can finally check the state off their bowl game bingo card.

The Wildcats (8-4, 6-3 Big 12) will make their first-ever visit to a Florida bowl game on December 28 as they meet the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the Pop-Tarts Bowl at Camping World Stadium.

The Wolfpack finished all alone in third place in the ACC at 9-3, 6-2. A 13-10 loss to Louisville on September 29 is all that kept NC State from playing Florida State last night, and this team might well have had the horses to beat the Seminoles and completely erase today’s outrage and angst.

Of course, Florida State’s playoff snub threw the ACC’s bowl selections into chaos, kicking the Wolfpack down a notch. The bowl was apparently trying very hard to land Notre Dame — a team that has never deigned to share a gridiron with K-State — but that didn’t work out, so the Irish continue to use every method available to them to duck the Wildcats.

But that’s fine, because this game will be the first-ever meeting between K-State and the Wolfpack, too.

The Big 12’s other announced post-season destinations at this writing:

  • (3) Texas vs (2) Washington, Sugar Bowl/CFP semifinal (New Orleans)
  • (12) Oklahoma vs (14) Arizona, Alamo Bowl (San Antonio)
  • (20) Oklahoma State vs Texas A&M, Texas Bowl (Houston)
  • Iowa State vs Memphis, Liberty Bowl (Memphis)
  • Kansas vs UNLV, Guaranteed Rate Bowl (Phoenix)
  • Texas Tech vs California, Independence Bowl (Shreveport)
  • UCF vs Duke Georgia Tech Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa)
  • (Utah vs Northwestern), Las Vegas Bowl

You’ll note West Virginia isn’t on this list, and that’s because at this writing nothing is official. Reports are that they’ll be taking the SEC slot in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte against a yet-to-be-determined ACC team North Carolina, it was finally determined.

Edit: after it had already been announced by multiple official parties, Duke was suddenly moved to the Birmingham Bowl and Georgia Tech took their place.
