Greatest Wildcats Jersey Countdown: #4

#4 Terence Newman (CB) 1998-2002 (Others considered: Mario Smith)

Why?: Speed, Speed, Speed. No other word describes Terence Newman’s playing ability. His name does not rank at the top of any defensive statistics, but there is no denying Newman made his mark at Kansas State. A lightly recruited speed demon from Salina, Newman was a great example of work ethic and the ability of Snyder’s program to take track stars and turn them into football stars. Newman followed in the footsteps of Chris Canty, playing offense at times as well as defense in 2002, as he shut-down opposing receivers on a regular basis. Newman’s senior season was marked with great punt returns, one extra point return, and quarterbacks refusing to throw against him. He finished that season with first team All-Conference honors, consensus All-American honors, and the Jim Thorpe Award as the best defensive back in the nation, becoming the first player in the history of "Defensive Back U" to win the award. At the end of the senior season, Newman was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1st round of the NFL Draft with the #5 pick, and spent 15 years in the NFL with Cowboys, Bengals, and Vikings.

Career Numbers:

INTs: 10

Yards: 33

TDs: 0

Most Memorable Play: After a USC touchdown near the end of the first half in 2002, KSU looked to be headed to the locker room on a down note. Just then, the Wildcats field goal block team darted in, blocking the kick. Newman scooped it up and rocketed up the field, at point running across the field, before following some well-placed blocks to give the Wildcats two points.

Current Players on the Roster Wearing #4: Wayne Jones – Sophomore DB, Malik Knowles – Sophomore WR

Odds to Replace Newman on This List: 4%. This may seem a little high, but both do have 3 seasons left to make their mark and Newman really didn’t take over a starting role until his junior season. Both will have 1 extra season of starting time to build their resumes, but I still lean heavily toward Newman keeping this spot for a long time, though Knowles could find himself on this list at #81, since he wore that for a good portion of his true freshman season.
