Greatest Wildcats Jersey Countdown: #6

#6 Matt Miller (QB) 1994-1995 (Others considered: Erick Harper)

Why?: Grit, determination, accuracy. The California-born quarterback came to Kansas State after having transferred from Texas A&M. Matt Miller took over the reigns of the Kansas State program for one year, and rewrote the passing accuracy records. Surrounded by arguably the greatest receiving corps in school history, Miller’s deadly accuracy was surpassed only by his inability to stay healthy. Injured multiple times in his senior year, Miller demonstrated what Bill Snyder’s offense could do with a mobile quarterback. Unfortunately, memories of Matt Miller often center around his injuries and the fact that he only played as a starter for one year. Take a look at the stats for that year, however: 154-240 for 2,059 yards and 22 touchdowns. That 64.2% completion percentage still ranks highest for one season in school history, and his career mark of 62.3% is also tops for quarterbacks throwing at least 200 passes. Miller also earned the distinction of coaching under Bill Snyder, mentoring the Wildcat tight ends between 1999 and 2005.

Career Numbers

Attempts: 252

Completions: 158

Percentage: 62.3%

Yards: 2,096

TDs: 22

Most Memorable Play: Easy. In a game which featured six Wildcat turnovers, Miller delivered when it mattered most. On the game’s final play, Miller took the snap, rolled left, turned and rocketed a pass across the field to an open Kevin Lockett, who stepped into the endzone with no time left to give K-State a comeback win over Cincinnati.

Current Players on the Roster Wearing #6: Justin Gardner – Junior DB, Keyon Mozee – True Freshman RB

Odds to Replace Miller on This List: 42%. Given that Miller had only 1 season as the starter and battled injuries throughout that season. Given that his passer rating numbers have been passed by Waters, I think there’s a good chance one of these two will outdo Miller and become a legend, but I’m not sure which one just yet. Time will tell, but I like what both bring to the team.
