Greatest Wildcats Jersey Countdown: #9

#9 Sean Snyder (P) 1991-1992 (Others considered: Percell Gaskins)

Why?: The first true All-American in the Snyder era, the coach’s son proved to be an outstanding punter after transferring from Iowa. With the departure of Chris Cobb following the 1990 season, Snyder stepped into the vastly important role of pinning opponents deep, giving the Wildcat defense as much field as possible with which to work. Sean Snyder flat out delivered. Watching his punts could almost give you whiplash as they seemed to explode off his foot. At one point, Snyder held virtually every single game, season, and career punting record at Kansas State. His punting was so strong that in 1992 he was named the first Consensus All-American of the Snyder Era, a fitting testament to the importance of special teams on Bill Snyder’s teams.

Career Numbers:

Punts: 135

Yards: 5,800

Average: 42.96

Most Memorable Game: It’s hard to describe a single play for a punter, so we’ll go with the best game performance. For Sean Snyder, it’s no contest. Facing the powerful running game of Colorado in 1992, the Wildcat offense proved incapable of generating an attack of its own. That left Snyder with the task of making the Buffaloes embark on long drives. At the end of the day, Snyder had punted 12 times for 630 yards; an average of 52.5 yards per punt, at the time the second highest average in one game in school history.

Current Players on the Roster Wearing #9: Demarrquese Hayes – True Freshman LB, Jacardia Wright – Redshirt Freshman RB

Odds to Replace Snyder on This List: 9%. Both of these guys have the time to create a powerful legacy for the Cats, but we have to remember that Sean Snyder was a consensus All-American and is on the Ring of Honor. Hayes probably has the better shot, given how often RBs are rotated in this system and how crowded the room is right now, but I won’t sell Wright short. He has the size to be a powerful bruising RB that could rack up yards and TDs by pounding teams into submission. It’s early to go too high on the odds, but I’m excited to see what these two bring to the team.
