In which BracketCat counts down the 21st day until the 2020 kickoff with a profile of Kansas State defensive back Malachi Mitchell.

#18 Darreyl Patterson
The last defensive back to wear No. 18 was Darreyl Patterson (18), even though he himself later switched to No. 21 prior to graduating. Now it will be taken up by freshman safety Malachi Mitchell.

Disclaimer: As the 2020 football season still is “technically” scheduled to proceed as planned in Manhattan, with the recent delay of our season opener until Sept. 12 against Arkansas State, we will reset and continue this Countdown for just a little bit longer...

Malachi Nathaniel Mitchell (b. April 28, 2002) is a quick, athletic defensive back from Legacy High School in Mansfield, Texas. He plans on majoring in business administration.

Mitchell played under head coach Chris Melson at Legacy, where he was regarded as the 65th-best safety in the Class of 2020 by ESPN and No. 99 by 247Sports.

He totaled 95 tackles during his prep career — including eight tackles for loss — to go along with a pair of interceptions, and also competed in track and field for the Broncos.

Mitchell picked K-State over offers from Air Force, Arkansas State, Army, Colorado State, Fordham, Kansas, Louisiana-Monroe, Navy, Texas State and Texas Tech.

His chief recruiter was defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman, his likely position coach.
