21 MINUS 7 DAYS TO 2019 KICKOFF: Wykeen Gill

In which BracketCat counts down the 14th day until the 2019 kickoff with a profile of Kansas State wide receiver Wykeen Gill.

Wykeen Gill (21) was a pleasant and unexpected surprise in an otherwise mostly dismal 2018 season. Now, after a nearly unprecedented series of wide receiver departures in the offseason, he’s suddenly one of the most veteran wideouts left.

Wykeen Akie Gill Jr. (b. April 28, 1998) is an interesting case. He walked on to K-State and redshirted in 2016, but was not a member of the team in 2017. He returned in 2018, though.

Gill caught one pass for 5 yards for the White team in the 2018 spring game. He saw action in 10 games during the 2018 season, including his first career start against Kansas.

Gill hauled in seven catches for 54 yards; had a three-catch, 22-yard game against the Jayhawks, featuring a long snag of 15 yards; and also caught two passes for 16 yards at TCU.

He played under head coach Jim Smith at Atchison High School, where he helped the Redmen to earn an 8-1 record with a league and district championship as a senior in 2015.

Gill, who originally walked on as a dual-threat quarterback, threw for 2,089 yards and 25 touchdowns on 122-of-223 aim throughout his career, while he rushed 219 times for 1,572 yards and another 28 scores. Now he has converted into a very effective slot wide receiver.

Gill was a two-time all-state honoree from The Topeka Capital-Journal and The Wichita Eagle, while he was the league player of the year as a junior and senior. He also earned all-state honors in basketball as a junior and senior.
