This punt blocked by Brock Monty (24) for a safety probably was the highlight of the walk-on’s season, seeing how it helped to send Bill Snyder out a winner in his final home game ever.

Brock Edward Monty (b. April 20, 1998) is a preferred walk-on defensive back from Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School in Wichita who became a special teams stalwart in his first year on the field. He will continue his work on special teams while adding depth in the secondary.

Monty also was recruited by some teams as a dual-threat quarterback prospect, the position at which he excelled most at the prep level.

He also attracted interest from Iowa State, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma State, according to 247 Sports, and he had offers from Cornell and Harvard.

Michigan supposedly offered Monty preferred walk-on status. He redshirted in 2016, earning the K-State’s Overachiever Award as the top freshman in strength and conditioning.

Monty played in 12 games in 2017, tying for team-high honors with three tackles on punt coverage. He was one of just 10 Big 12 players to earn first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors with a 4.0 grade-point average.

Monty was the White team’s leading tackler in the 2018 spring game, netting 11 solo tackles and three assisted tackles, plus a tackle for loss and a forced fumble.

He played in 10 games and carded six tackles in 2018, including four on kickoff coverage to tie for fourth on the team in special teams tackles.

Monty tied for fifth nationally with two blocked punts, one against Oklahoma State and one against Texas Tech, the latter going out of the back of the end zone for a safety that was the first by a Wildcat via a blocked punt since 2003.

Monty earned his bachelor’s degree in finance in May and currently is pursuing his master’s degree in business administration. He was named the team’s Special Teams MVP and picked up first-team Academic All-Big 12 accolades for the second straight season.

As a high school sophomore in 2013, Monty led the Crusaders to a 10-2 mark and a trip to the Kansas Class 5A semifinals, where the Crusaders were beaten by Salina South. He was an All-City League quarterback after he passed for 1,254 yards and rushed for 613.

After a dip in production in his junior year, Monty threw for more than 2,000 yards and rushed for more than 500 during his senior season, leading the Crusaders back to the 5A playoffs, where they were upset in the first round.

In all, he helped the Crusaders to earn a combined 27-14 record over his four years and lettered all four of those years under head coach Dan Adelhardt.

Monty was a three-time honorable mention all-state honoree as a defensive back by The Topeka Capital-Journal, while he earned all-state honors from The Wichita Eagle in 2015.

He combined for more than 5,000 passing yards, 2,800 rushing yards and 80 total touchdowns during his career.

Monty also earned honorable mention accolades as a quarterback from the Eagle as a sophomore and junior. He lettered in basketball and track, earning all-state honors.
