First up today, the bad news. Former K-State and Golden State great Mitch Richmond shared on Tuesday the deeply saddening news that his youngest son, Shane, passed away on Monday night at the age of 20. Our thoughts go out to the Richmond family during this time of grief.
In other basketball news, Ryan Black at The Mercury profiled what’s next for sophomore guard Shaun Williams (who has apparently decided to drop the “Neal” from his last name).
On the women’s side, the Big 12 Conference announced the preseason all conference teams, as voted on by the coaches, and senior Peyton Williams (Preseason All-Big 12) and junior Rachel Ranke (Honorable Mention) received nods headed into the 2019-20 season.
Chris Klieman held his weekly press conference on Tuesday, his second during a bye week this season, and addressed injuries, practice changes, and other news and notes affecting the Wildcats right now. Kellis Robinett at The Wichita Eagle had his five noteworthy things from the press conference, and Ryan Black at The Mercury wrote a little more in-depth about the departure of DB Marcus Hayes from the Wildcat program. While the Wildcats are now 3-2 on the season, Klieman and his team are looking at that start through a “glass-half-full lens”. And analysing the Cats the last two games shows one thign very clearly, the Wildcats strength was once the rushing attack, but it’s now a weakness.
Several KC-area college players will be eligible for the XFL draft next week, with 13 players with regional ties to the Kansas City and Wichita areas in the draft pool for the new league. Former Wildcats Danzel McDaniel, Kendall Adams, Arthur Brown, Will Geary, and Winston Dimel are among that group.
The doubles team of Anna Turco and Margot Decker dropped their lone set in doubles competition in the Qualifying Round at the ITA All-American Championships, failing to punch their ticket to the main event of the tournament later this week. The duo became just the second pairing in school history to even compete in the Qualifying Round at the event.
