21 DAYS TO 2018 KICKOFF: Wykeen Gill

In which BracketCat counts down the 21st day until the 2018 kickoff with a profile of wide receiver Wykeen Gill.

#6 Carlos Strickland II
Well, Carlos Strickland (6) came and went with nary an impact on the field, despite high expectations for the Cal transfer who just couldn’t seem to put it together at K-State. Now his No. 21 will be taken over by Wykeen Gill, who’s curiously rejoining the team after not being on the roster during the 2017 season.

  • Position: Wide Receiver
  • Previous College: None
  • Projection: Scout Team
  • Status: Preferred Walk-On

Wykeen Akie Gill Jr. (b. April 28, 1998) is an interesting case. He walked on to K-State and redshirted in 2016, but was not a member of the team in 2017. Now Gill is apparently back.

Even more curiously, he will take over the No. 21 of another recently departed player, Carlos Strickland II, who double-transferred away from Manhattan after failing to make an impact.

Gill caught one pass for 5 yards for the White team in the 2018 spring game.

He played under head coach Jim Smith at Atchison High School, where he helped the Redmen to earn an 8-1 record with a league and district championship as a senior in 2015.

Gill, who originally walked on as a dual-threat quarterback, threw for 2,089 yards and 25 touchdowns on 122-of-223 aim throughout his career, while he rushed 219 times for 1,572 yards and another 28 scores. Now he will convert to a slot wide receiver.

Gill was a two-time all-state honoree from The Topeka Capital-Journal and The Wichita Eagle, while he was the league player of the year as a junior and senior. He also earned all-state honors in basketball as a junior and senior.
