Thursday Night College Football Open Thread

The big game isn’t a BIG game, but it’s definitely an interesting one.

Welcome to the football weekend, ladles and germs.

There are three football games this evening for your viewing pleasure. One is a boring old NFL game, but it’s of local interest here because of the presence of one Jordy Nelson, who seems to have recovered from an injury to his quadriceps, in tonight’s battle betwixt the Green Bay Packers (2-1) and the Chicago Bears (1-2) on Thursday Night Football (CBS, 7:25 CT).

In the college ranks, over on ESPNU at 6:30 CT, there’s a fun HBCU tilt between North Carolina Central and Florida A&M. NCCU (2-1, 1-0 MEAC) has won 16 straight conference games and at least a share of three straight MEAC crowns. Tonight, the Eagles are going to have to get past a resurgent FAMU squad without their starting quarterback. The Rattlers (2-2, 1-0 MEAC) have had a lot of trouble since having to scuttle an abortive move to become the first HBCU team in FBS a decade ago, but have finally started turning the corner.

The marquee this evening, however, belongs to the Big 12. Texas invades Jack Trice Stadium to take on Iowa State at 7:00 CT on ESPN. The Cyclones (2-1, 0-0) are a bit of a cipher so far this year, having won big against lesser opponents while losing the CyHawk Trophy in overtime. Texas (1-2, 0-0) may be even more of one; their season-opening embarrassment against Maryland has been followed up with a resounding victory over San Jose State and a thrilling yet heartbreaking overtime loss to the USC Trojans last week.
