Despite a shocking home loss to Iowa State, Oklahoma remains very much in the Big 12 title conversation, and The Oklahoman’s Jenni Carlson tells us the Sooners certainly have some significant strengths. Namely, dynamic senior quarterback Baker Mayfield and hybrid lineman/linebacker Obo Okoronkwo, maybe the league’s best edge rusher. This team could beat anyone and TCU still has to make a trip to Norman.
But Jenni also sees some serious flaws, notably on the outside on both sides of the ball. Jordan Thomas hasn’t looked like a preseason First Team All-Big 12 cornerback, and no receivers have stepped up to fill the shoes of 2016 Biletnikoff Award winner Dede Westbrook. Some of the defensive problems can be attributed to Mike Stoops, and we talked about Jenni’s recent column regarding how warm his seat is. Still, she says K-State seems to play to the strengths of the OU defense, so Saturday could be another uphill battle for the Wildcats.
