Behind the Scenes of National Signing Day 2017: Sammy Wheeler

An in-depth look at the 6’4 quarterback from Lenexa, Sammy Wheeler

St. James Academy is nestled in the heart of Lenexa, Kansas and one of the closest knit alumni and fan bases in the area. Boasting being the first and only Catholic high school in Lenexa, St. James Academy is rich in education and athletic talent. Luckily for K-State, one of their top football stars will be joining the Wildcats this year. In case you missed my article about Sammy Wheeler this summer, check it out here. Not only is Wheeler a versatile quarterback, his family has roots with the K-State football program, Wheeler’s father (Sean Wheeler) and uncle (Michael Wheeler) played wide receiver for the Wildcats as well.

Here is my brief interview with the incoming quarterback, of course I had to include the Blazin’ Challenge that I mentioned with Ben Adler and Harrison Creed.

Gracey Terrill: With the success of the 2016 Kansas State team, how are you feeling going into the 2017 season?

Sammy Wheeler: The plan is for me to grey shirt so as a fan I am super excited about next year but it will stink to sit out of the fun.

GT: The excitement throughout the K-State fanbase for the 2017 season is already building and the season is so far away, what are you looking forward to most about playing for K-State?

SW: The thing I am most excited for about play for K-State is the atmosphere at the home games.

GT: As a quarterback prospect with experience at wide receiver, you have family members that played wide receiver at K-State. Do you see yourself playing as a prospect for both positions?

SW: I am open to any positions, I really don't think you will be seeing me play anything but quarterback.

GT: You recently went on your official visit to Kansas State… what were your overall thoughts? Favorite spot on campus?

SW: I loved K-State, everyone says that the people there are so inviting and it's so true.

GT: There has been some talk with fellow offensive members of the 2017 commitment class about doing a Blazin’ Challenge at Buffalo Wild Wings... would you be down for some offensive team bonding over wings?

SW: I would be totally up for that challenge but I'm not good with spicy food.

GT: One last question, if you could share one reason that you are excited to be part of the K-State family with other recruits… what would it be?

SW: I'm really excited to get to know them better and hopefully make some really good friends.

No doubt about it, Sammy Wheeler will be a great addition to the Kansas State program and we look forward to his future success with the team! #EMAW
