March 23 NIT, CBI, CIT, WNIT, WBI Schedules and March 22 Results

Only four games last night, but the pace picks up again this evening.

But could Gonzaga win the Horizon League?

Yesterday was dull. Terribly, horribly, dull. So we'll just briefly recap and move on to today's schedule. In the NIT, Valparaiso posted their argument regarding the possibility that maybe they should have gotten an NCAA bid by knocking the living snot out of Saint Mary's in the second half after heading into the locker room trailing the Gaels by two. Valpo held the Gaels to thirteen -- thirteen -- second-half points, and Saint Mary's suffered a stretch of nearly 10 minutes without scoring a single point starting with 2:44 left in the first half. End result: 16-point Valpo romp.

In contrast, Creighton poured in 45 second-half points against BYU -- and still lost, because the Cougars scored fifty and already had a one-point lead at the half. BYU and Valpo now get a week off before heading to Madison Square Garden for the NIT semifinals.

The WNIT also had a blowout and less of one. Hofstra stole their win from Virginia, literally. The Pride had 16 steals, and scored 31 of their 65 points off 25 Cavalier turnovers; the game stayed close until a pair of turnovers after Virginia had tied the game at 51 allowed Hofstra to pull away for good. Hofstra heads to the quarterfinals on a date to be determined, and will travel to either Dunk City or Tulane, depending on who wins that game tonight.

In Ann Arbor, Michigan just obliterated San Diego. They get the winner of tomorrow's Ohio-Temple matchup, site and date to be determined.

We'll determine the other two teams heading to New York for the NIT semifinals, figure out who'll meet in the best-of-three CBI championship series, and settle three of the four CIT semifinal berths. For those of you who like streaming things, the Louisiana-Lafayette/Cal-Irvine CIT game could be especially interesting because any game with Mamadou Ndiaye is interesting, right? Most of you, however, will dive into the doubleheader on ESPN2, and that's fine because this is America.

Today's Women's Schedule

By bedtime tonight, half of the teams in the WNIT quarterfinals will be decided. The big game, simply by virtue of being Pac-12-on-Pac-12 violence, is Utah-Oregon. Like their male counterparts, the WBI final (which will be played Saturday or Sunday, depending on the host) will be set tonight. The brackets broke in the most bizarre fashion possible, as the top two seeds in the right bracket meet in one semifinal, while the bottom two seeds from the right bracket face off in the other. Madness.
