1 DAY TO 2016 KICKOFF: Parker Gates

In which BracketCat counts down the last day until the 2016 kickoff with a profile of wide receiver Parker Gates.

No. 85 was worn most recently by tight end Zach Trujillo. Now Parker Gates will inherit it, although I don't think he'll end up a starter like Trujillo.

Parker Mitchell Gates (b. Aug. 6, 1997) is a walk-on wide receiver from Beloit who is taking the K-State family thing to the next extended level. A four-year letter-winner for St. John’s High School under head coach Keith Kresin, Gates helped the Bluejays to obtain a combined 32-9 record during his four years, including an 11-1 mark and a state runner-up finish in 2013.

He earned all-state honors in 2015 from The Wichita Eagle and The Topeka Capital-Journal, while he also earned all-district honors throughout his career after he hauled in 57 career receptions for 882 yards and 14 touchdowns, while he rushed 187 times for 1,453 yards and 23 scores.

Gates was selected to play in the 2016 Kansas 8-Man All-Star Game, in which he recorded six catches for 153 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown reception.

He also earned all-state honors in basketball, helping St. John’s to earn a state championship in 2014, while he lettered in golf and track. Watch Gates' high school football highlights here.
