Last Night:

There was no basketball last night, you silly goose.

Tonight:

It is on like Donkey Kong, my friends. This afternoon, we've got the WNIT final with UCLA visiting the West Virginia (the state) to take on West Virginia (the university) on a technically neutral court. And then tonight, all your hatred and bile can be safely unleashed against Duke and either Kentucky or Wisconsin. (Look, we're not going to countenance, much less recommend, any shade thrown toward the sainted Thomas Izzo.)

This, truly, is the demarcation point between those who like watching basketball being played and those who attach to sports as narrative. We often use that nasty n-word as an insult, but it's not in this case; if you were ever rooting for George Mason or VCU or Butler in the Final Four, you were wholly justified. Narratives have power, and the underdog rising up to challenge the gods is the purest and most incontestable form of the trope. But tonight there will be people who find Kentucky-Wisconsin exciting and perfect, and people who find it horrible and inhumane.

The reality of the situation is that they're both right. It will be a fantastic basketball game, and nothing good will come of it. Them's the breaks.

You'll have the usual smorgasbord of Final Four options, as each game will air on three separate cable networks. For fans of the teams in question, this allows them to bask in homerrific glory. For the rest of us, this means we can escape Jim Nants if we start to find him unbearable. It's really a win-win for everyone.

This is your Final Four Open Thread, which will launch a little early just in case folks are actually watching West Virginia try to win something for the Big 12 this post-season. Your schedule and viewing options:
