College Football Coaching Changes

Wherein we keep track of the nonsense. For you!

This guy? Not going anywhere.
This guy? Not going anywhere.
John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

It's the silly season, and change is in the air. Of course, K-State appears to be avoiding that game this fall, which leaves us without the opportunity to talk about potential candidates and such.

But that's okay. We can just talk about everyone else! Behind their backs, even!

Here, in handy table form, are all the confirmed coaching changes so far. We'll keep this updated until the carousel stops spinning and every chair has a butt in it. Below that, we'll discuss some of the hottest rumors, and we'll also address the hottest candidates and who's pursuing them.

(Note: for a couple of days, we had Mike Jinks on the wrong line so it looked like he was taking over at BYU, and nobody caught it. Sorry about that.

Our first updates may come almost immediately, as Central Florida is rumored to have Bowling Green head coach Dino Babers locked up, Maryland may be close to pulling the trigger on Michigan DC D.J. Durkin although they've also interviewed Terp legend and Chargers OC Frank Reich, and Memphis has reportedly moved quickly, offering their vacant job to Missouri DC Barry Odom.

One of these three happened.

Both Georgia and South Carolina are in on Alabama DC Kirby Smart.

Georgia won.

Miami appears to be aiming at either former HC Butch Davis or Alabama assistant and former FIU HC Mario Cristobal.

But ended up hiring Mark Richt.

USC is chasing anyone important, if reports can be believed. Unfortunately for the Trojans, so far everyone important who's commented has flatly stated they aren't interested. That list now includes Chip Kelly, Pete Carroll, Jeff Fisher, John Harbaugh, and Mike Gundy.

And after all that, ultimately just retained interim HC Clay Helton.

Syracuse isn't linked to anyone from their end yet, but LSU DL coach Ed Orgeron -- who has already dismissed any interest in the Toledo and Tulane jobs, and who USC refuses to consider -- is interested in the Orange.

Syracuse did offer the job to Scott Frost, allegedly, but he turned it down.

Candidate tracker

Aside from the above mentions, there are some names that constantly pop up whenever there's an opening anywhere.

TCU co-OC Doug Meacham was incorrectly reported to have taken the UNT job. And then he was going to Tulane, but maybe that's not accurate either. CHAOS.

Arizona HC Rich Rodriguez appears to still be on the South Carolina radar, but that's it.

Utah HC Kyle Whittingham was linked to the USC job, but that didn't happen.

Clemson DC Brent Venables isn't linked to any opening at this time.

Georgia Southern HC Willie Fritz had only been connected to the Iowa State gig, but then Tulane swept in late with an offer that's still pending.

Tom Herman accepted a huge raise to to stay at Houston, one which has a de-escalating buyout triggered by planned facility upgrades not being started. That sounds like an "I'm staying here as long as you help me build this program" contract.

Bud Foster has also been a perennial speculative candidate for lots of jobs, but he's choosing to stay put at Virginia Tech as Justin Fuente's DC.

Temple's Matt Ruhle hasn't been mentioned much yet, but he was apparently in the mix for the Virginia job.

P.J. Fleck was on the radar for Illinois, and may still be on South Carolina's. But Western Michigan appears very close to making Fleck an offer to stay which would be ridiculous for a MAC school.

Jeff Tedford resigned as HC of the CFL's BC Lions specifically to look for a job in the college ranks, and is probably at least on the radar for every unfilled job.
