Kansas State 39th in AP Poll, 30th in Coaches... 21st in Computers

No, there's nothing screwy going on here or anything.

We prefer this number to the other two.

The new polls are out, and once again Ohio State sits atop both the AP Poll and the Amway/USA Today Coaches Poll -- although they're starting to lose support at the top after this week's desultory effort against Northern Illinois. Kansas State received 8 points in the AP Poll -- 480 fewer than Arizona, who we'll remind you struggled to beat UTSA at home a week before K-State demolished the Roadrunners on the road -- and 47 in the coaches' poll, 558 fewer than the other Wildcats.

But the computer rankings tell a vastly different story. Every team ranked in the top 25 of the composite computer ranking as complied by Ken Massey, with three exceptions, is ranked in the top 25 of both polls. The exceptions:

  • West Virginia, ranked 24th in the computers, 27th in the AP, and 26th in the coaches' poll. Obviously, that's not out of line.
  • Mississippi State, ranked 25th in the computers, 26th in the AP, and 31st in the coaches' poll. The coaches are a bit screwy here, but at least the writers are on point.
  • Kansas State, ranked 21st in the computers, but somehow 39th in the AP and 30th in the coaches' poll. Only one other team suffers a similar snub from the human voters this week: Florida, ranked 27th by the computers, 40th in the AP, and 34th in the coaches' poll.

Meanwhile, several teams are grossly overrated by the filthy Hu-Mans. California, Toledo, and Houston have done nothing to impress the transistors, but all received heavy support from the writers. To the coaches' credit, none of the three cracked the top 35, but then the coaches also still have Auburn 25th, so...

We'll analyze things further tomorrow when we Unbox the Polls. For now, here's the rankings, sorted by AP and including both the coaches poll and computer composite. All teams which received votes in either poll this week or last, or finished in the top 40 of the computer composite this week or last, are included.
