5 DAYS TO KICKOFF: Alex Delton

In which BracketCat counts down the fifth day until kickoff with a profile of quarterback Alex Delton.

Fair or not, warranted or not, Alex Delton has drawn a lot of comparisons to this guy. Whether Delton plays this season will be the first sign as to the extent of his possible greatness.

Alex Christian Delton (b. Oct. 23, 1996) as a highly regarded quarterback who graduated high school last December and enrolled at K-State a semester early. He definitely will compete for playing time as a true freshman.

Delton was not especially impressive throwing the ball during the spring game in Kansas City, but his running skills already are breathtaking. If he made enough headway during the summer and fall, he might not redshirt.

However, I'm going to play this conservatively and assume the coaches would rather preserve his eligibility.

A four-year letter-winner at Hays High School, including during his final season under head coach Bo Black, Delton was rated the 23rd best dual-threat quarterback nationally by Rivals.com and 33rd by ESPN, while he also was rated the fifth-best player in the state of Kansas by Rivals.com and the top quarterback in the state by ESPN.

Delton was an honorable mention all-state selection by The Topeka Capital-Journal and The Wichita Eagle in 2014 after rushing for 1,519 yards and 17 touchdowns, in addition to throwing for 1,402 yards and 13 scores.

He was named the 2014 Area Player of the Year by The Hays Daily News, while he also was the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Delton earned first-team all-conference honors as a sophomore, junior and senior, and he finished his career with more than 6,700 total offensive yards and 75 touchdowns. He also lettered three years in track.

GoPowercat.com's recruting analysts have nothing but good things to say about Delton:

BRIAN GATES: If Alex Delton progresses like his skills could allow him to, he will be the player the class is remembered by. Coaches saw him early at the Rivals Camp Series prior to his junior year of high school and were on him hard ever since. They feel good about his skills and their opportunity to develop them further.

TIM FITZGERALD: If Alex Delton develops into the prototypical K-State quarterback, he could have a significant impact on the program.

GATES: Alex Delton has the chance to be one of the best players in this class. But that likely won't be in 2015. He is talented and was an early target for this staff, but the coaches aren't likely planning on him right away, unless he performs in the 2015 spring practices at an extremely high level.
