78 DAYS TO KICKOFF: Bryce Fitzner

In which BracketCat counts down the 78th day until kickoff with a profile of offensive lineman Bryce Fitzner.

Sizewise, Bryce Fitzner doesn't quite compare to the mammoth that is Cornelius Lucas, but he's got plenty of height to play the left tackle position in college.

Bryce Fitzner (June 24, 1994) is an athletic offensive lineman who used a grayshirt in 2013 and a redshirt season in 2014 to develop and become stronger. He definitely will compete for playing time as a redshirt freshman.

Based on his starting at left tackle for the White team, it appears that Fitzner already has beat out last year's backup to Cody Whitehair, Ajahne Brager. That seems to signal he's the heir apparent after Whitehair graduates this year.

Fitzner played under head coach John Morrison for Francis Parker High School, where he was a second-team pick at tight end as both a junior and senior.

That led some to believe he would play tight end for us, but the coaches think — and I agree — that Fitzner's potential ceiling is much higher as an offensive tackle.

He helped the Lancers to earn California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) runner-up finishes in both 2011 and 2012, while he was a member of the 2009 CIF championship squad. Watch his high school highlights here.

Fitzner also was a three-year letter-winner in basketball and a two-year letter-winner in volleyball.
