#96 Austin McCormick |
Position: Defensive End Previous College: None Projection: Third-String Status: Walk-On |
Austin Mitchell McCormick (b. May 24, 1995) is a walk-on defensive end who prepped at Maize High School South under head coach Brent Pfeifer and redshirted last season.
He helped the Mavericks to earn a 9-2 record during his senior season in 2012, including an undefeated mark in league and district play.
Since he did not appear on the 2013 roster, I only can assume McCormick delayed his enrollment, or grayshirted, until spring 2014 in order to get started on his mechanical engineering degree and put on more weight.
No offense to McCormick, who I am sure is a very nice kid, but the fact that he started for the White team in the 2015 spring game and therefore projects as a third-string defensive end is illustrative of our lack of depth at the position.
It also speaks to why so many of us hope Aulelio Olomua can be an impact presence in his first season.
McCormick did combine with Sean Newlan to tackle the two most impressive runners, Winston Dimel and Justin Silmon, once each, and also carded a solo tackle of Charles Jones for the second straight spring game.
