The United States waited until deep into the evening to get on the board again, but once they did they racked up a quick pair of medals to extend their lead in the medal count to equal the largest lead anyone's had the entire games. Canada also scored a pair, both of which they were assured of before they even woke up this morning. Russia, Norway, and Germany each found the podium once. Shut out today were the Dutch, but we suddenly have an interloper to take into account. France racked up four medals today to pull within one of the Germans, giving us a valid excuse to finally turn out top six into a top seven:

For the first time since the 20-year war-aided gap between 1932 and 1952, the USA goes two straight Olympics without a ladies' singles figure skating medal. Gracie Gold finished a distant 4th, Ashley Wagner 7th, and Polina Edmunds 9th. Carolina Kostner is a new Italian hero; her bronze is the first-ever medal for Italy in ladies' singles.

BRONZE | Switzerland | ||
4th | Sweden |
Switzerland erupted for four third-period goals, becoming the first women's hockey team to wipe out a two-goal third-period deficit in a medal game. It's the first hockey medal for the Swiss since the men won the bronze in 1948; they also won the bronze in 1928, and those two medals had something in common: they were won in Switzerland. So this is the first Swiss hockey medal won on foreign soil, as well.
Jessie Vetter was an impenetrable wall for 56 minutes, and Team USA's defense managed to kill off a 5-on-3 penalty without even allowing a shot on goal. Meghan Duggan and Alex Carpenter scored for the Americans, and they held a 2-0 lead with three-and-a-half to go. And then Canada charged back. Brianne Jenner scored. Canada pulled Shannon Szabados for an extra attacker. A wild clear by the US almost went in the empty net, but bounced off the goal post. And then with 55 seconds left, Marie-Philip Poulin dinked the puck into a hole that barely seemed to exist. Tie game. Overtime.
Team USA got a power play six minutes in when Catherine Ward was called for cross-checking, and then everything went bad. Five seconds later, Jocelyn LaMoureax was called for slashing on a terribly dubious call; arguably, the "slash" was a stick motion anticipating a shot rebound. A little over a minute later, Hilary Knight was called for cross-checking; it probably could have been a penalty shot, but the penalty itself was bad enough. Just 39 seconds later, with Canada having a two-skater advantage, Poulin scored again and it was all over. Canada had won the gold... again.
