Sochi Olympics 2014: Day 13 Recap, Day 14 Schedule and How to Watch

Another large day for Team USA, and it was barely enough to keep pace with their closest competitors.

Ted Ligety, first two-time USA gold medalist in Alpine.

Nathan Bilow-USA TODAY Sports

The top four all had a huge day, and they're starting to pull away from the pair below them... to the point where we're almost of a mind to drop Germany from the table. Three medals each for Team USA and Russia, a pair each for the Netherlands and Norway, and one for Canada leave us with today's top six:

COUNTRY G S B TOTAL
United States 7 5 11 23
Netherlands 6 7 9 22
Russia 6 9 7 22
Norway 9 4 7 20
Canada 5 9 4 18
Germany 8 3 4 15

Results:

Alpine Skiing:

MEN'S GIANT SLALOM
GOLD Ted Ligety USA 2:45.29
SILVER Steve Missillier France 2:45.77
BRONZE Alexis Pinturault France 2:45.64

Ligety finished the first run atop the leaderboard, and stayed there to become the first American to win gold in the giant slalom as well as the first American male to win two golds in Alpine. As for the other Americans, Tim Jitloff finished 15th, Jared Goldberg 19th, and Bode Miller 20th. Miller injured himself during the second run; as a result, he withdrew from the slalom event, and the legend's Olympic career comes to a close.

MIXED RELAY
GOLD Tora Berger
Tiril Eckhoff
Ole Einar Bjoerndalen
Emil Hegle Svendsen
Norway 1:09:17.0X
SILVER Veronika Vitkova
Gabriela Soukalova
Jaroslav Soukup
Ondrej Moravec
Czech Republic 1:09:49.6X
BRONZE Dorothea Wierer
Karin Oberhofer
Domink Windisch
Lukas Hofer
Italy 1:10:15.2

Ole Einar Bjorndalen wins his 7th career Olympic gold medal, and his 13th career medal overall. Team USA (Susan Dunklee, Hannah Dreissigacker, Tim Burke, and Lowell Bailey) finished 9th. They were fourth after Dunklee's leg, but things went as they usually do for the Americans in biathlon after that.

Bobsled:

WOMEN'S BOBSLED (heats 3-4)
GOLD Kaillie Humphries
Heather Moyse
Canada 1 3:50.61
SILVER Elana Meyers
Lauryn Williams
USA 1 3:50.71
BRONZE Jamie Greubel
Aja Evans
USA 2 3:51.61

So close. On a track which was decidedly slower on the day's second run than on the first, USA 1 had a pretty decent run in heat four compared to the rest of the field... except for Canada 1, who somehow managed to beat them by a quarter of a second in heat four. USA 3 (Jazmine Fenlator and Lolo Jones) finished 11th, and once again the problem was not the start time. So don't be hatin' on Lolo.

Cross-Country:

LADIES' TEAM SPRINT CLASSIC
GOLD Ingvild Oestberg
Marit Bjoergen
Norway 16:04.05
SILVER Aino-Kaisa Saarinen
Kerttu Niskanen
Finland 16:13.14
BRONZE Ida Ingemarsdotter
Stina Nilsson
Sweden 16:23.82

Team USA (Sophie Caldwell and Kikkan Randall) finished third in their semifinal run, and qualified for the final as Lucky Losers. They finished in eighth place.

MEN'S TEAM SPRINT CLASSIC
GOLD Iivo Niskanen
Sami Jauhojaervi
Finland 23:14.89
SILVER Maxim Vylegzhanin
Nikita Kruikov
Russia 23:15.86
BRONZE Emil Joensson
Teodor Peterson
Sweden 23:30.01

Team USA, Simeon Hamilton and Erik Bjornson, finished sixth.

Curling:

WOMEN'S SEMIFINALS
Canada 6-4 Great Britain
Sweden 7-5 Switzerland
MEN'S SEMIFINALS
Canada 10-6 China
Great Britain 6-5 Sweden

Canada will meet Sweden for the women's gold; Great Britain faces Switzerland for the bronze. In the men's group, Great Britain scored a pair in the final end to come from behind and nip Sweden. They'll face Canada for the gold, while Sweden takes on China for bronze.

Figure Skating:

LADIES' (short program)
1 Yuna Kim Korea 74.92
2 Adelina Sotnikova Russia 74.64
3 Carolina Kostner Italy 74.12
4 Gracie Gold USA 68.63
5 Yulia Lipnitskaya Russia 65.23
6 Ashley Wagner USA 65.21
7 Polina Edmunds USA 61.04

I took the table all the way up to seven to include all the Americans, but also to illustrate that something just doesn't seem quite right here. That's a massive gap between third and fourth, and this is a situation where 4-5-6 were strong contenders for medals. It's going to be hard to make up that gap in the free skate, although anything's possible.

Ice Hockey:

MEN'S QUARTERFINALS
(1) Sweden 5-0 (9) Slovenia
(4) Finland 3-1 (5) Russia
(3) USA 5-2 (6) Czech Republic
(2) Canada 2-1 (10) Latvia

Slovenia gave Sweden a run for their money through almost 50 minutes, only trailing 2-0 after an Alexander Steen power play goal late in the first period and a Daniel Sedin score early in the third. Then, with 12 minutes to go, the wheels fell off. Loui Eriksson scored for the Swedes, then Carl Hagelin added a pair to bury Slovenia. Henrik Lundqvist recorded a shutout. Erik Karlsson had a pair of assists, and familar names Daniel Alfredsson and Nicklas Backstrom each contributed to the cause as well.

Juhamatti Aaltonen, the ageless Teemu Selanne, and Mikael Granlund scored to push Finland into the semifinals against Sweden. Selanne and Granlund each added an assist, as did Kimmo Timonen and Petri Kontiola. Those three goals answered the opening salvo from the Russians, who scored first when Pavel Datsyuk fed Ilya Kovalchuk midway through the first period. Tuukka Rask kept the net empty the rest of the way.

Team USA ripped the Czech Republic behind five different scorers. David Backes had a goal and an assist, and James van Riemsdyk, Duston Brown, Phil Kessel, and (finally getting on the scoresheet) Zach Parise also hit the net. Ryan Suter and Ryan Kesler each had a pair of assists, along with singles from Patrick Kane, Ryan McDonagh, Joe Pavelski, and Kevin Shattenkirk. All the Czechs could muster was a pair of unassisted goals from Ales Hemsky. The Americans get a semifinal date with...

...Canada, who survived a ridiculous goaltending performance from Latvia's Kristers Gudlevskis and a furious late flurry spearheaded by Sandis Ozolinsh to advance. Patrick Sharp scored early for the Canadians, helped by Rick Nash, but Lauris Darzins answered for Latvia less than two minutes later, with assists from Arturs Kulda and Janis Sprukts. The two teams then locked horns ineffectually for over 37 minutes before Drew Doughty and Jonathan Toews fed Shae Weber to put the Canadians ahead 2-1. Latvia pressed Carey Price relentlessly for the next seven minutes, but Price was up to the task and Canada held on for the win.

LADIES' PARALLEL GIANT SLALOM
GOLD Patrizia Kummer Switzerland
SILVER Tomoka Takeuchi Japan
BRONZE Alena Zavarzina Russia

No American women even qualified for the event. Zavarzina's husband is...

MEN'S PARALLEL GIANT SLALOM
GOLD Vic Wild Russia
SILVER Nevin Galmarini Switzerland
BRONZE Zan Kosir Slovenia

...Vic Wild, and if you're wondering how in hell a Russian is named Vic Wild, it's because he's not Russian. He's an American who married Zavarzina and ran off to Russia because he was frustrated with US support for his sport. So the USOC basically cost the USA a medal here. As for the actual American in the field, Justin Reiter finished 24th in the qualifying heat of the men's event, and failed to advance.

Speed Skating:

LADIES' 5000m
GOLD Martina Sablikova Czech Republic 6:51.54
SILVER Ireen Wust Netherlands 6:54.28
BRONZE Carien Kleibeuker Netherlands 6:55.66

Maria Lamb, Team USA's only entry, finished 16th (and last).
