Sochi Olympics 2014: Day 11 Recap, Day 12 Schedule and How to Watch

Team USA made history today -- twice.

Steven Holcomb and Steven Langdon WERE going here, but then this happened.

The Russians and Americans each grabbed a pair of medals today, pushing them to the head of the class. Canada, Germany, and Norway each grabbed a single prize -- including yet another gold for Germany, padding their lead in that column -- leaving us with this iteration of our top six:

COUNTRY G S B TOTAL
Russia 5 7 6 18
United States 5 4 9 18
Netherlands 5 5 7 17
Canada 4 7 4 15
Norway 5 3 7 15
Germany 8 3 2 13

The Men's 15k Mass Start was postponed for the second day in a row due to heavy fog at Krasnaya Polyana. It's been rescheduled for 4:30am tomorrow. The women's event, much later in the day, was able to proceed as planned:

WOMEN'S 12.5k MASS START
GOLD Darya Domracheva Belarus 35:25.6
SILVER Gabriela Soukalova Czech Republic 35:45.8
BRONZE Tiril Eckhoff Norway 35:52.9

Susan Dunklee, the only American entry -- indeed, the first American woman to ever qualify for the event -- finished in 12th place.

Bobsled:

TWO-MAN (heats 3-4)
GOLD Alexander Zubkov
Alexey Voevoda
Russia 1 3:45.39
SILVER Beat Hefti
Alex Baumann
Switzerland 1 3:46.05
BRONZE Steven Holcomb
Steven Langdon
USA 1 3:46.27

The United States captures its first two-man bobsled medal since 1952. USA 2 (Cory Butner/Chris Fogt) finished 12th; right behind them in 13th was USA 3 (Nick Cunningham/Dallas Robinson).

Cross-Country:

Curling:

MEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 12
China 6-5 Great Britain
Russia 8-7 Germany
Switzerland 6-3 USA
Denmark 5-3 Norway
MEN'S FINAL STANDINGS
RK TEAM W L
1 Sweden 8 1
2 Canada 7 2
3 China 7 2
4 Norway 5 4
5 Great Britain 5 4
6 Denmark 4 5
7 Russia 3 6
8 Switzerland 3 6
9 USA 2 7
10 Germany 1 8

Ties are broken by head-to-head, except when that tie determines advancement to the semifinals... which means Norway and Great Britain have to play a match tonight to settle matters. Sweden will play the winner of that game in the semis; China will face Canada.

WOMEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 11
Japan 8-5 China
Great Britain 9-6 Russia
Korea 11-2 USA
WOMEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 12
Sweden 8-4 Japan
Switzerland 10-6 China
Canada 9-4 Korea
Denmark 8-7 (11) Great Britain
WOMEN'S FINAL STANDINGS
RK TEAM W L
1 Canada 9 0
2 Sweden 7 2
3 Switzerland 5 4
4 Great Britain 5 4
5 Japan 4 5
6 Denmark 4 5
7 China 4 5
8 Korea 3 6
9 Russia 3 6
10 USA 1 8

Great Britain needed only to score in the extra end against Denmark to avoid the Canadian buzzsaw in the semifinals; they didn't. Sweden will meet Switzerland in the other semifinal. And, well, Team USA... sigh. The Americans are 5-22 in round-robin play since finishing fourth at Salt Lake City.

Figure Skating:

ICE DANCING (free skate)
GOLD Meryl Davis
Charlie White
USA 195.52
SILVER Tessa Virtue
Scott Moir
Canada 190.99
BRONZE Elena Ilinykh
Nikita Katsalapov
Russia 183.48

Finally, the United States captures a gold medal in ice dancing. It's only the fourth dance medal ever for Team USA. It was a great performance for the Americans in total; Madison Chock and Evan Bates finished in eighth, and Maia and Alex Shibutani came in ninth.

Freestyle Skiing:

MEN'S AERIALS
GOLD Anton Kushnir Belarus 134.50
SILVER David Morris Australia 110.41
BRONZE Zongyang Jia China 95.06

Mac Bohonnon, Team USA's only representative, escaped the qualification and quarterfinal rounds by the skin of his teeth, but bowed out in the semifinals, finishing fifth.

Ice Hockey:

WOMEN'S SEMIFINALS
USA 6-1 Sweden
Canada 3-1 Switzerland

Brianna Decker and Megan Bozek each had a goal and two assists, Amanda Kessel and Kacey Bellamy each had a goal and an assist, and the USA also got goals from Alex Carpenter and Monique LaMoureux to roll over Sweden and into the gold medal game. Anna Borgqvist averted the shutout with just under seven minutes remaining, but it was all over by that point. Team USA had 70 shots on goal to only 9 for the Swedes, who just didn't have the speed to attack; all too often, a Swedish skater would enter the attacking zone and find four Americans there with her before help arrived.

Canada jumped out to an early lead in their semifinal on a pair of Natalie Spooner goals, the second of which was quickly followed by a score from Melodie Daoust, and it turned out they sort of needed them. Jessica Lutz scored for the Swiss midway through the second period to close the gap, and Florence Schelling kept the Canadians out of her net the rest of the way. Switzerland couldn't make that pay off on the other end, though, and Canada advances to the gold medal game against Team USA. Switzerland and Sweden will play for bronze.
