Sochi Olympics 2014: Day 10 Recap, Day 11 Schedule and How to Watch

Group play is done in hockey, and it's a Russian disaster.

Weibrecht and Miller kept Team USA in range of the top of the medal board.
Weibrecht and Miller kept Team USA in range of the top of the medal board.

The Dutch swept yet another speed-skating event, which vaults them back to the top of the leaderboard. The American double in the men's Super G kept Russia from passing them, but the Eagle and the Bear are now tied for second. Norway picked up one medal -- and the event they failed to medal in today will be a source of deep national angst -- and the Canadians two; Germany maintains the lead in gold medals but made no podium appearances today, leaving them at the bottom of our top six:

COUNTRY G S B TOTAL
Netherlands 5 5 7 17
Russia 4 7 5 16
United States 4 4 8 16
Norway 5 3 6 14
Canada 4 6 4 14
Germany 7 3 2 12

Results:

Alpine Skiing:

MEN'S SUPER G
GOLD Kjetil Jansrud Norway 1:18.14
SILVER Andrew Weibrecht USA 1:18.44
BRONZE Jan Hudec
Bode Miller
Canada
USA
1:18.67

Yet another medal tie in Alpine, this one resulting in Bode Miller finally grabbing that sixth Olympic medal he'd been chasing all week. Weibrecht moved up from his bronze medal finish in Vancouver. Ted Ligety finished 14tn, and Travis Ganong 23rd. The Americans took sole possession of the medal lead with this result.

Biathlon:

The Men's 15k Mass Start, scheduled for this morning, was rescheduled for midnight tonight.

Bobsled:

TWO-MAN (heats 1-2)
1 A. Zubkov/A. Voevoda Russia 1 1:52.82
2 B. Hefti/A. Baumann Switzerland 1 1:53.14
3 S. Holcomb/S. Langton USA 1 1:53.18

It's tight at the top. USA 2 (Cory Butner/Chris Fogt) had a horrible second run, falling from medal position all the way down to 11th. USA 3 (Nick Cunningham/Dallas Robinson) is in 13th.

Cross-Country:

MEN'S RELAY 4x10k
GOLD L. Nelson
D. Richardsson

Russia 1:29:09.3
BRONZE J.M. Gaillard

France 1:29:13.9

The American team of Andy Newell, Erik Bjornsen, Noah Hoffman, and Simeon Hamilton finished in 1:33:15.1, good for 11th place.

Curling:

MEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 10
Canada 8-6 USA
Sweden 8-4 Russia
Norway 7-6 Great Britain
WOMEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 10
Canada 7-6 (11) USA
Denmark 7-4 Korea
Japan 9-7 (11) Switzerland
Sweden 5-4 Russia
MEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 11
Canada 9-8 (11) China
Norway 5-3 Switzerland
Denmark 6-3 Germany
Sweden 6-4 USA

Sweden joins Canada in the women's semifinals, but the fight over the last two spots tomorrow is going to be a brawl. It's a little clearer on the men's side, where Canada and Sweden have qualified; China, Norway, and Great Britain are in contention for the other two spots, and China plays Great Britain tomorrow.

Figure Skating:

ICE DANCING (short program)
1 M. Davis/C. White USA 78.89
2 T. Virtue/S. Moir Canada 76.33
3 E. Ilinykh/N. Katsalapov Russia 73.04

Meryl Davis and Charlie White broke their own record for highest score posted in the short program since the adoption of the current scoring rules. The other American pairs did reasonably well also; Madison Chock and Evan Bates are in 8th and Maia and Alex Shibutani are in 9th.

Ice Hockey:

WOMEN'S CLASSIFICATIONS
Finland 2-1 Germany
Russia 6-3 Japan

The second game had some excitement. The two teams combined for four goals in a frenetic 81 seconds -- which began just seconds after the end of a Japanese power play. Japan scored while Russia was still getting back to full strength, Russia scored in transition 30 seconds after the face-off, then Japan scored immediately off the face-off, then Russia struck back again less than a minute later.

Finland will play Russia for fifth place; Germany will take on Japan to determine seventh and eighth.

MEN'S GROUP A
USA 5-1 Slovenia
Russia 1-0 (so) Slovakia

Phil Kessel had a natural hattrick, with Joe Pavelski assisting on all three goals (plus an extra from James van Riemsdyk) as the Americans rolled into the quarterfinals. Ryan McDonagh and David Backes also scored for Team USA. Ryan Miller came 18 seconds from a shutout, but it was spoiled when Marcel Rodman slipped one in during a mad final rush.

In the other Group A final, Russia -- needing only a regulation win to guarantee passage to the quarters -- choked. Semyon Varlamov and Jan Laco kept the game scoreless through regulation and overtime, necessitating the Russian's second shootout in as many days. Michal Handzus and Tomas Tatar missed for the Slovakians; Alexander Radulov hit for Russia between those misses, and Ilya Kovalchuk ended the contest without the need for the third shootout round. Russia will be forced into the quarterfinals as the fifth seed.

Slovenia 1-2-0-0 3 6-11 -5
Slovakia 0-3-0-1 1 2-11 -9
MEN'S GROUP B
Austria 3-1 Norway
Canada 2-1 Finland

Michael Grabner, as of the end of his game the leading scorer in these Olympics, scored twice and assisted on a Michael Raffl power play goal to lead Austria to a reasonable seed in the quarterfinals. Per-Age Skroder scored for Norway, who end up as the seventh seed in the quarters.

Canada and Finland required overtime; Drew Doughty scored 2:32 into the extra frame to give Canada the win and the Group B title. It was Doughty's second goal of the game; he got help from Jeff Carter, Shea Weber, and Sidney Crosby. Tuomo Ruutu scored for Finland two minutes into the second period to tie the game, and it stayed that way for forty minutes. The overtime had an impact: Canada is now the second seed in the quarterfinals, and Sweden gets the top seed. Finland is the fourth seed, advancing as the best team not to win its group.
