Sochi Olympics 2014: Day 8 Recap, Day 9 Schedule and How to Watch

Oh, look. There's an absolute tie atop the medal leaderboard.

Don't worry, she happy.
Don't worry, she happy.
Alex Livesey

So, get this: Norway and Germany? Not a single medal between them today. Canada wouldn've been shut out except for the final medal event of the night. Meanwhile, with a single silver medal, the United States pulled into a tie for first with Norway; each country has exactly the same medal count across the board. Your top six:

COUNTRY G S B TOTAL
Norway 4 3 6 13
United States 4 3 6 13
Netherlands 4 3 5 12
Russia 2 5 5 12
Canada 4 5 2 11
Germany 7 2 1 10

Results:

Alpine Skiing:

MEN'S SUPER COMBINED
GOLD Sandro Viletta Switzerland 2:45.20
SILVER Ivica Kostelic Croatia 2:45.54
BRONZE Christof Innerhofer Italy 2:45.67

Bode Miller bounced back from a 12th place finish in the downhill run to place 7th in the slalom, which put him 6th overall. Jared Goldberg and Ted Ligety finished back-to-back at 11th and 12th. Andrew Weibreched was 20th after the downhill, but didn't finish the slalom.

Biathlon:

WOMEN'S 15k
GOLD Darya Domracheva Belarus 43:19.6
SILVER Selina Gasparin Switzerland 44:35.3
BRONZE Nadezhda Skardino Belarus 44:57.8

Hannah Dreissigacker of the USA finished 23rd, followed by Susan Dunklee in 34th, Sara Studebaker in 55th, and Lanny Barnes in 64th.

Bobsled:

Begins Sunday.

Cross-Country:

MEN'S 15k CLASSIC
GOLD Dario Cologna Switzerland 38:29.7
SILVER Johan Olsson Sweden 38:58.2
BRONZE Daniel Richardsson Sweden 39:08.5

Cologna continues his weird non-Scandinavian domination of the sport in these games. Team USA finishes: Noah Hoffman was 31st, Erik Bjornsen 38th, Brian Gregg 47th, and Kris Freeman 52nd.

Curling:

MEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 7
Sweden 6-5 (11) China
USA 8-5 Germany
Canada 10-4 Norway
WOMEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 7
Denmark 9-2 USA
China 11-3 Korea
Great Britain 12-3 Japan
Russia 6-3 Switzerland
MEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 8
Germany 8-7 Switzerland
China 7-5 Norway
Russia 7-6 USA
Great Britain 8-6 Denmark

In the men's competition, Germany and Switzerland, at 1-5, are eliminated from medal contention.

Figure Skating:

MEN'S (free skate)
GOLD Yuzuri Hanyu Japan 280.09
SILVER Patrick Chan Canada 275.62
BRONZE Denis Ten Kazakhstan 255.10

American Jason Brown skated last and had a shot at the bronze, but a tentative program resulted in a 9th place finish. Jeremy Abbott finished 12th.

Freestyle Skiing:

LADIES' AERIALS
GOLD Alla Tsuper Belarus 98.01
SILVER Mengtao Xu China 83.50
BRONZE Lydia Lassila Australia 72.12

Americans Ashley Caldwell and Emily Cook both easily qualified for the final. Cook advanced after Final 1; Caldwell did not, and finished in tenth place. Cook didn't qualify for the medal final, finishing in eighth.

Ice Hockey:

MEN'S GROUP C
Czech Republic 4-2 Latvia
Sweden 1-0 Switzerland

Jaromir Jagr scored his second goal of the Olympics, which is amazing for a guy using a walker. Marek Zidlicky got his second as well; Martin Erat and Jakub Voracek added goals to lift the Czechs to a relatively pain-free win. Janis Sprukts and Herberts Vasiljevs scored for Latvia. Also getting on the scoresheet: Petr Nedved, with a Czech assist.

In the other Group C game, it took over 50 minutes, but someone finally found a way to put the puck in the net. Daniel Alfredsson scored, helped out by Erik Karlsson and Patrik Berglund, to put the Swedes clearly atop the group standings. They're assured of a free pass to the quarterfinals, as the worst they can do is tie with a team they've already beaten. Henrik Lundqvist kept the net clean for Sweden; but they got some bad news to go with their otherwise good day: team captain Henrik Zetterberg may be done for the Olympics, suffering from a herniated disc.

MEN'S GROUP B
Canada 6-0 Austria
Finland 6-1 Norway

Jeff Carter had a hat trick -- his first only ten seconds after skating out of the penalty box -- and Canada got goals from Shea Weber, Drew Doughty, and Ryan Getzlaf to roll over Norway. Patrick Marleau assisted on all three of Carter's goals; Weber and Getzlaf picked up assists, as did Sidney Crosby, finally appearing on the stat sheet. Roberto Luongo kept the net clean.

As for Finland, are you kidding me? Teemu Selanne scored a goal, and goalie Kari Lehtonen had two assists. Lauri Korpikoski added a pair of goals, Olli Jokinen had a goal and an assist, Olli Maatta had a goal and two assists, and Tuomu Ruutu helped out on a pair. Jori Lehtera also scored. For Norway, they only got one goal, a power play strike by Per-Age Skroder early in the third period.

Skeleton:

MEN'S (after two heats)
1 Alexander Tretiakov Russia 1:51.99X
2 Martins Dukurs Latvia 1:52.55
3 John Daly USA 1:53.58
3 Matthew Antoine USA 1:53.84

No, not that John Daly. But by all means, go ahead and try to chase that visual from your mind. The third American in the competition, Kyle Tress, is in 21st.

WOMEN'S (final)
GOLD Elizabeth Yarnold Great Britain 3:52.89
SILVER Noelle Pikus-Pace USA 3:53.86
BRONZE Elena Nikitina Russia 3:54.30
4 Katie Uhlaender USA 3:54.34

It was THAT close for Uhlaender, who had a fantastic final run and beat Nikitina by 0.18 seconds. The problem? She needed to beat her by 0.22 seconds. Uhlaender, who partially resides on her late father's farm in Atwood, Kansas, nearly snagged a medal for the Sunflower State.

Ski Jumping:

MEN'S LARGE HILL (qualification)
1 Michael Hayobeck Austria 124.8
2 Daiki Ito Japan 122.0
3 Rehuhi Shimizu Japan 120.4

They're not in the medal positions, but three of the four Americans qualified for tomorrow's first round: Nicholas Alexander (30th), Nicholas Fairall (31st), and Anders Johnson (36th). Peter Frenette wasn't so lucky; he finished 43rd.
