Sochi Olympics 2014: Day 6 Recap, Day 7 Schedule and How to Watch

The top of the medal table gets a little more crowded, and it took until late at night for the US to medal.

Gold, Bronze, whatever. They're both yellowish.

Norway and Canada each picked up a single medal today, but the three teams trailing them each snagged two each to close the gap. The Germans snagged three today, and although they're not in the top five overall -- they're sixth, with eight medals -- they hold a commanding lead in gold medals with six. Your top five:

COUNTRY G S B TOTAL
Norway 4 3 5 12
Canada 4 4 2 10
Netherlands 4 2 4 10
Russia 2 4 3 9
United States 3 1 5 9

Results:

Alpine Skiing:

WOMEN'S DOWNHILL
GOLD Tina Maze Slovenia 1:41.57
GOLD Dominique Gisin Switzerland 1.41.57
BRONZE Lara Gut Switzerland 1:41.67

That's right, two gold medals. It's the first time in the history of the Winter Olympics that a timed medal event has resulted in a tie for the gold, and that'll start the question of whether downhill should measure to the thousandth of a second. Team USA's Julia Mancuso finished 8th, followed by Laurenne Ross at 11th, Stacey Cook 17th, and Jacqueline Wiles in 26th.

WOMEN'S GROUP A
Finland 4-3
(OT)
Switzerland
Canada 3-2 USA

Switzerland finally put up a fight, and scored on a critical power play in the final four minutes of regulation to force overtime. The Finns managed to escape, though. Switzerland will play the winner of tomorrow's game between Sweden and Russia; Finland gets the loser.

As for the main event, Team USA and Canada had a scoreless battle going until Hilary Knight scored on a power play midway through the second period to give the Americans the lead. Early in the third period, things fell apart. Meghan Agosta scored a power play goal less than three minutes into the period, and then Hayley Wickenheiser slotted the puck on a disputed play less than two minutes later. Replay showed that a whistle blew before the goal, but that's not a reviewable situation. With five minutes left, Agosta broke free and beat Jessie Vetter one-on-one to put the Canadians up 3-1; an early decision to pull Vetter for the extra attacker paid off with just over a minute to play when Anne Schleper scored, but Team USA was unable to get the equalizer in the final minute.

Both teams advance to the semifinals; Canada will play the winner of the game between Finland and the loser of the Sweden-Russia game; the United States will face either Switzerland or the winner of Sweden-Russia.

MEN'S GROUP C
Switzerland 1-0 Latvia
Sweden 4-2 Czech Republic

Switzerland and Latvia fought through a scoreless game until Simon Moser scored with 7.9 seconds left to give the Swiss the win. In the other contest, a pair of Erik Karlsson goals staked Sweden to a 4-0 lead, and although a couple of quick goals midway through the second cut the lead in half, the Czechs couldn't catch up.

LADIES' HALFPIPE
GOLD Kaitlyn Farrington USA 91.75
SILVER Torah Bright Australia 91.50
BRONZE Kelly Clark USA 90.75
(4th) Hannah Teter USA 90.50

American Arielle Gold withdrew before the start. Kaitlyn Farrington, fourth in the second heat of the qualification round, advanced to the semifinal; Hannah Teter came in second in the same heat and moved directly to the final. In the first heat, Kelly Clark topped the standings, and also moved straight to the final. Farrington joined them without even having to take her second run in the semifinal (though she did); she took the top score in the first run of the semifinal with an 87.50; on the second run, only one rider even managed to score over 57 points.

In the final, Teter and Farrington sat 1-2 after the first run, while Clark didn't have a great run. Farrington improved on her run to move into first early in the second wave. Teter had a horrible second run, but was still in second place when the event got down to the final two riders -- Bright and Clark. With Farrington already assured of a medal, the Americans were thinking sweep. But Bright jumped Teter for second, and then Clark knocked Teter off the podium for the bronze.

Speed Skating:

MEN'S 1000m
GOLD Stefan Groothus Netherlands 1:08.39
SILVER Denny Morrison Canada 1:08.43
BRONZE Michel Mulder Netherlands 1:08.74

The dismal showing by Team USA continued. Shani Davis and Brian Hansen paced the Americans, finishing eighth and ninth. Joey Manta was 15th; Jonathan Garcia 28th.
