Sochi Olympics 2014: Day 4 Recap, Day 5 Schedule and How to Watch

Curling is underway, and the USA starts the day off with another medal but can't add.

You think that's great, wait for the downhill.
You think that's great, wait for the downhill.
Matthew Stockman

Before we get to the fun, how's the new layout look, eh?

Norway got shut out on the day, which allowed... some of the pack tied for second to move up. But not all, as you'll see here in the Top Five:

COUNTRY G S B TOTAL
Canada 3 3 1 7
Netherlands 3 2 2 7
Norway 2 1 4 7
Russia 1 2 3 6
United States 2 0 3 5

Results:

Alpine Skiing:

WOMEN'S SUPER COMBINED
GOLD Maria Hoefl-Resch Germany 2:34.62
SILVER Nicole Hosp Austria 2:35.02
BRONZE Julia Mancuso USA 2:35.15

Mancuso held a sizeable lead after the downhill, but ran over two seconds behind Hoefl-Resch in the slalom and had to settle for third place. Americans Laurenne Ross and Stacey Cook did not finish the downhill run. Leanne Smith did, finishing 20th, but failed to finish the slalom.

Biathlon:

MEN'S 12.5km PURSUIT
GOLD Martin Fourcade FRA 33:48.6
SILVER Ondrej Moravec CZE 34.02.7
BRONZE Jean Guillaume Beatrix FRA 34:12.8

Tim Burke finished 22nd to lead the USA delegation. He was followed by Lowell Bailey in 38th and Leif Nordgren in 53rd.

Curling:

WOMEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 1

Canada 9-2 China

Russia 7-4 Denmark
MEN'S ROUND ROBIN
SESSION 2
Norway 7-4 USA
Switzerland 5-4 Canada
Sweden 8-4 Great Britain
Denmark 11-10 (11) Russia

Bad start for the Americans, and the day's action ended with a thrilling extra end between Denmark and Russia to break a 10-10 tie.

Figure Skating:

Off day; returns tomorrow.

Freestyle Skiing:

MEN'S MOGULS
GOLD Alex Bilodeau Canada 26:31
SILVER Michael Kingsbury
Canada 24:71
BRONZE Alexandr Smyshlyaev
Russia 24.34

American Patrick Deneen had to go through both qualifying rounds to reach the final, but he got there. Bradley Wilson advanced from the first qualification. Things went differently in the final rounds. Wilson did horribly on both turns and his air, failing to qualify for the semifinal. Dineen advanced, in ninth place, then squeaked into the medal run by .01 points; he finished sixth.

Ice Hockey:

WOMEN'S GROUP A
USA 9-0 Switzerland
Canada 3-0 Finland

Team USA basically just ambushed the Swiss, scoring three goals in the space of 55 seconds midway throught he first period -- two of them just eight seconds apart -- and just cruising from that point. Canada, on the other hand, struggled with Finland for two and a half periods before breaking through on a power play and then opening up the lead. Both Canada and the USA are now through to the semifinals; their game Thursday just determines seeding.

Luge:

WOMEN'S SINGLES (after 2 runs)
1 Natalie Geisenberger Germany 1:39.814
2 Tatiana Heufner Germany 1:40.580
3 Erin Hamlin USA 1:40.632

No American luger, male or female, has ever medaled in singles. Erin Hamlin is halfway there. Erin Hansen's in 10th, and Summer Britcher's 15th.

Nordic Combined:

Begins Wednesday.

Short Track:

MEN'S 1500m
GOLD Charles Hamelin Canada 2:14.985
SILVER Tianyu Han China 2:15.055
BRONZE Viktor An Russia 2:15.062

J.R. Celski of the USA finished fourth, more than half a second off the pace. Celski and Eduardo Alvarez advanced to the semis from the qualification heats, but Chris Creveling didn't -- despite a time a full second faster than Alvarez, due to Creveling finishing third in a much faster heat. Alvarez was disqualified during the semifinals for the usual short track reasons.

In the qualification heats for the Ladies' 500m, Emily Scott advanced for the Americans. Jessica Smith didn't, and Alyson Dudek was disqualified. The semifinals of the Ladies' 3000m Relay were also today, but Team USA failed to even qualify for the Olympics. Korea, Canada, China, and Italy qualified for the final.

Skeleton:

Begins Thursday.

Ski Jumping:

Off day; returns tomorrow.

Snowboard:

Off day; returns tomorrow.

Speed Skating:

MEN'S 500m
(combined time, two runs)
GOLD Michel Mulder Netherlands 69.31
SILVER Jan Smeekens Netherlands 69.32
BRONZE Ronald Mulder Netherlands 69.46

The Mulder twins were sitting 1-2 going into the final pair, and then it looked like Smeekens had taken the gold. A post-race correction, however, gave Michel Mulder the 1/100 of a second win. Brian Hansen was 33rd after the first run, but withdrew prior to the second due to a muscle strain. The other Americans finished, but had a horrible outing. Shani Davis finished 24th, Tucker Fredricks 26th, and Mitchell Whitmore 27th.
