Missed opportunities. They're the bete noire of K-State athletics, it seems. Last night we got another one, although we at least have one takeaway: this team actually is pretty good. But in the end, it's that hyphenated pair of numbers that determine your fate, and last night added a spot to the L column.
As a result, K-State now plays for third place in the Maui Invitational against a team that, surprisingly, they've never faced before in Jamie Dixon's Pitt Panthers. The two teams are on a remarkably similar trajectory; both won a couple of bodybag games at home, then traveled west and lost a true road game on the way to Maui. Then they beat up an overmatched opponent in the tournament's first round before falling against a ranked opponent in the semis.
The difference? K-State barely lost to Arizona, while Pitt got dumped hard by San Diego State. As a result, K-State finds themselves a solid favorite tonight, but not so solid that we can expect a cakewalk. Let's just hope we can get some offense from somewhere other than Wichita Falls and that the guys start crashing the boards.
Go Cats!
