#28 Jarvis Leverett Jr. |
Position: Running Back Previous College: None Projection: Starter Status: On Scholarship |
Jarvis De-allo Leverett Jr. (b. April 21, 1994) is a quality athlete who shined on the scout team during his redshirt season and will compete for the starting running back spot as a sophomore while adding depth to special teams.
Leverett, who earned the team's Red Raider Award as the top contributor on the scout team in 2012, did not see any action in 2013. But he didn't earn that award for nothing. I think he will end up the starter by the end of the season.
He was listed as the eighth-best running back in Texas in 2012 by The Houston Chronicle while prepping at Cypress Lake High School and also was named to the newspaper's Texas Top 100 list that year.
Leverett was a bit of a steal for us because most schools backed off during his junior year. He had amassed 349 yards and five TDs through three games when he tore his ACL and missed the rest of that season.
Well, he bounced back in a big way. In a three-game stretch, Leverett had 500 rushing yards and five touchdowns as a senior at Cypress Lake. Our persistence in recruiting him, even as other schools ignored him, paid off.
Leverett also was named his school's MVP in track as a sophomore, when he was a member of the district-qualifying 4x100 meter relay team, so there's some speed there in addition to his power.
