#51 David Smith
Previous College: None
Projection: Special Teams
David Andrew Smith (b. Oct. 30, 1991) is a walk-on linebacker from Liberty Christian High School who redshirted in 2010 and did not see any playing time the next two seasons.
In 2013, Smith played on special teams against Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Kansas and Michigan, but did not record any statistics. He projects as at least a probable scout team and special teams contributor in 2014, as well.
He was first-team all-state during his senior year after recording 93 tackles and leading Liberty Christian to the state finals. No matter what the level of competition, being first-team anything in the state of Texas is impressive.
Smith also was a consensus selection to the all-district first team and all-district MVP on defense in 2009. In his sophomore year, he helped to lead his team to a state championship.
The competition for second- and third-string linebacker looks as if it will involve several walk-ons, preferred or otherwise. This year could be Smith's best chance to break into the rotation in some capacity.
