KANSAS STATE RPI WATCH: 11/23/14

In which Texas and West Virginia dominate their tournaments, while K-State and Pittsburgh can't even make it into theirs undefeated.

Note: This entry covers games played from Wednesday through Friday. Weekend action will be recapped Monday.

Both Kansas State and Pittsburgh committed the same cardinal sin Friday night: They thought scheduling a road game against a Big West team at least two time zones away before the Maui Invitational was a good idea.

It was not.

K-State fell 69-60 to Long Beach State, a team that had lost to the Wildcats three times in two years on two different islands and in Manhattan. Pittsburgh did the Cats one better, though, flying all way out to Maui and losing by four points to Hawaii in a "neutral" game.

Meanwhile, two other tournaments got under way. Texas won both games of the 2K Classic, which is a far cry from the Longhorns' loss two years ago to Chaminade in Maui.

However, a California upset of Syracuse in the semifinals deprived the Horns of a possible signature win.

In Puerto Rico, Texas A&M stumbled in the first round of the Tip-Off while West Virginia stormed to two wins and was leading No. 17 UConn in the championship game at the time of this writing.

It wasn't all good for the Big 12, though, which lost a chance at another quality win when Oklahoma blew an 11-point halftime lead at Creighton and lost by just two points.

All of K-State's other potential opponents won, except Bradley and Nebraska-Omaha, which appear to suck, and Texas Southern, which lost to fellow opponent Tennessee.

A sneaky good win in that mix was Savannah State's one-point victory over a Winthrop team that just had won at Clemson.
