9 DAYS TO KICKOFF: Vernon Vaughn

In which BracketCat counts down the ninth day until kickoff with a profile of wide receiver Vernon Vaughn.

Anyone remember Lamark Brown (87)? Although in the NFL, he never reached his potential, IMO. I think Vernon Vaughn can turn into what we all hoped Brown would become.

Vernon Vaughn is a speedy wide receiver who enrolled last semester and went through spring practices, commonly referred to as a "grayshirt." He will add depth at receiver and look to contribute on special teams.

Vaughn originally signed with K-State out of high school in 2012. He was a Kansas City-Atchison League first team pick at Sumner Academy, and was named to the All-Kansas first team during his sophomore and junior seasons.

He had 58 catches for 865 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior, and finished his career with 94 catches for 1,517 yards and 24 touchdowns. He averaged 16.1 yards per catch and one touchdown for every three catches.

Vaughn also led Sumner Academy's basketball team to two state championships, and was a league honorable mention selection on the court as a junior.

A Kansas Honor Scholar, USD 500 Scholastic Athlete and National Honor Society member, Vaughn accumulated a 3.48 grade-point average in high school, so academics shouldn't be a problem for him.

I like Vaughn's speed, size and potential, but it could take a while for him to see the field in a meaningful way. He grayshirted to recover from a significant injury, so he'll probably need a full season in pads to get back to speed.
