16 DAYS TO KICKOFF: Matthew McCrane

In which BracketCat counts down the 16th day until kickoff with a profile of kicker Matthew McCrane.

Replacing Anthony Cantele as a kickoff specialist will be difficult. Maybe Matthew McCrane will have a crack at it.

Matthew McCrane is a talented place-kicker who graduated high school early and enrolled in time for spring ball.

He connected on 7 of 12 field goals as a senior, including a school-record 52-yarder; was selected to play on Team USA in the 2013 U19 International Bowl; and won the Dallas Kicking Camp's Golden Boot Award in 2011.

McCrane was ranked the No. 17 kicker in the nation by 247 composite ranking, and No. 18 in the nation by Scout and 247. Kohl's National Scholarship Invite Camp gave him a five-star rating as a kicker and a 4.5 as a punter.

In addition to K-State, he had offers from Air Force, Northwestern, Oklahoma State and Southern Arkansas. The Cowboys have a good eye for kickers (remember Quinn Sharp?), so that second-to-last offer is most encouraging.

McCrane's best shot to see the field early is as a kickoff specialist. You can watch his highlights here and here.

In the spring game, McCrane averaged averaged 58.3 yards on three kickoffs. He's talented enough to compete for a starting job this year, but since he didn't attempt a field goal and several other kickers did, a redshirt looks likely.
