It's August, so it's time for preseason college football rankings. The USA Today Coaches Poll is the first to drop, as it was released just minutes ago.
Unsurprisingly, K-State did not find its way into the top 25. But the Wildcats didn't miss by much, as they received 113 votes and are the top team in the Receiving Votes category.
The Big 12 received little love in the preseason poll, with Oklahoma State checking in at No. 14 as the highest-rated Big 12 team. Texas and Oklahoma follow directly behind the Cowboys, and TCU is No. 21. Baylor is also in the Receiving Votes category, having received 80 votes.
Once again, the SEC's self-fulfilling prophecy dominates the preseason polls. Deservedly, Alabama checks in at No. 1. Six SEC teams found their way into the top 13, meaning that no matter how mediocre any of those teams may be individually, they will get enormous credit for beating each other.
K-State won't get much of a chance to prove itself early in the season with a weak non-conference schedule. But the Wildcats can prove their mettle quickly when conference play starts, with consecutive road trips to Texas and Oklahoma State. Win those games, and the rankings will take care of themselves.
