DeAndre Roberts |
Position: Defensive Line Previous College: Ventura (Calif.) College Projection: Third-String Status: On Scholarship? |
DeAndre Roberts was a mysterious late signee in the Class of 2012. GoPowercat.com lists him as a defensive tackle, but his community college's page says he played both defensive end and defensive tackle for the Pirates.
Roberts had 38 tackles, half a sack, three tackles for loss and two pass breakups last season.
Given that he's a little tall, rangy and lightweight for a tackle, I'm currently slotting him as a defensive end, but he probably could slide inside and hold down the fort there if we needed him to do so.
I have Marquel Bryant, Alauna Finau, Ryan Mueller and Devon Nash as my current DE two-deep, but they need some help, whereas I think DT is pretty stacked for us already with five or so solid candidates on scholarship.
I think Roberts, if he shows up as planned, ends up an end, and he might challenge for the depth chart this fall. I think he is supposed to be on scholarship, since he redshirted at Nevada, but he might be a grayshirt.
This premium article indicates he is supposed to be on campus already, that the coaches want him to gain weight and that he has two years to play two seasons, so he must be a redshirt junior if all that information is accurate.
But the article also says he was thinking of spending another year at Ventura, which would be surprising if he'd already been in college for three years.
Plus, the JUCO site lists him as a freshman in 2012, so I'm going with redshirt sophomore for his class for now.
