#85 Zach Trujillo |
Position: Tight End Previous College: None Projection: Co-Starter Status: On Scholarship |
Whoa! How the heck is Zach Trujillo (b. March 14, 1991) a redshirt junior already? Didn't he just get here?
My surprise at that fact is a testament to the talent that's been ahead of Trujillo for his whole career. But one half of that combo, Travis Tannahill, has graduated and the other half, Andre McDonald, has been a perpetual screw-up.
What that means is that Trujillo could end up one of our top four or five pass catchers by the end of the year. In 2012, he played in just two games, collecting a 58-yard catch and a 14-yarder. So his numbers are poised to rise sharply.
Now, unlike in last year's spring game (in which he did not play), McDonald was a beast in 2013's exhibition. And Trujillo was nowhere to be seen, although supposedly that was due to an undisclosed minor injury.
But even if McDonald does pull it together for his final season, we run a lot of two tight end sets. Trujillo is going to see significant playing time, given that our only other scholarship tight end, Cody Small, is a true freshman.
