According to tweets by Jeff Goodman and Blair Kerkhoff, junior-to-be Angel Rodriguez will transfer from K-State. Rodriguez led the Wildcats in assists and was second on the team in points per game last season. His improvement during conference play was a significant factor in K-State sharing its first conference title since 1977.
News broke on Saturday that 2013 point guard Nigel Johnson committed to K-State. Wildcat fans had just had time to get excited about the possibility of seeing Rodriguez and Johnson play together when the Rodriguez transfer news broke today.
Rodriguez reportedly considered transferring last season after Frank Martin left K-State for South Carolina. But incoming coach Bruce Weber convinced Rodrigurez to stay, laying the groundwork for the 2012-13 season. Through a spokesman, Rodriguez said he wants to be closer to his family.
Missing out on Texas Tech freshman Josh Gray -- who is also transferring -- in last year's recruiting class hurts even worse now. Johnson will need to be ready to go right away, as the Wildcats are looking awfully thin at the point next season.
