#3 Allen Chapman |
Position: Defensive Back Previous College: City College of San Francisco Projection: Starter Status: On Scholarship |
Allen "Bubba" Chapman (b. July 23, 1991) was the first JUCO defensive back to commit to K-State in the class of 2011. He later convinced his teammate, Nigel Malone, to commit as well, and Blinn's Kip Daily soon followed.
Considering the unexpected impact Malone made in his first season, Chapman deserves honors for that feat alone. Add in the fact that he tallied 50 tackles (eighth on the team), four pass breakups and a forced fumble.
And though Chapman only nabbed one interception, it was a biggie — a 60-yard return touchdown against Brandon Weeden that kept us in the OSU game and served notice that it would not be a repeat of the prior week's beatdown.
Without that interception, I don't know if that game goes down to the final seconds. It was a hell of a play. And then, of course, there also was Chapman's long return of a blocked PAT in the Cotton Bowl against Arkansas.
Now we'll see if that knack for big plays in valiant losses can translate into big plays in big wins. As a starter opposite Malone, Chapman will have ample chances in his senior season to make it happen.
