#33 Morgan Burns |
Position: Defensive Back Previous College: None Projection: Redshirt Status: On Scholarship |
Morgan Burns (b. May 19, 1993) was the No. 14 player in the state of Kansas in 2010, according to Rivals.com, but we chose to grayshirt him in 2011 in order for him to gain more weight and get a jump on college classes.
A three-time all-league pick at both defensive back and running back and a two-time all-metro selection, Burns rushed for 2,700 yards and 36 touchdowns during his last two seasons at Trinity Academy.
During his senior season, Burns rushed for more than 1,400 yards and 10 touchdowns on offense, while recording 60 tackles and 10 interceptions from the defensive backfield.
He also (and this is most important) was a state champion in track in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races, because he is fast as hell. And he was a member of a state-champion basketball squad, if you care about that sort of thing.
You can watch Burns' highlights here. But don't get too excited, because I think we have the depth to redshirt him.
Although he has the speed and agility to play cornerback for us down the line, I somewhat expect him to get his start in 2013 at safety. Thomas Ferguson will graduate after this season and there's a need there.
Of course, two of our top three JUCO cornerbacks will graduate, too, so I suppose the entire defensive backfield is wide open to competition next spring, minus Ty Zimmerman. Burns could be a four-year starter for us.
